Prep Transfers A "Fact Of Life" In Atlanta
By - Stephen Black - GPB Sports
| High school coaches in this state have a lot to worry about when it comes to transfers. According to GHSA rules, if a transfer was confronted at all by "undue influence," schools can be in violation of the transfer and recruiting rules. As discussed in a previous story ( "Undue Influence covers many areas") covers a lot of areas. In light of the David Boyd investigation at Milton, one of the state's most prominent basketball programs, accusations and rumors have been flying about some of the other top programs in the state, especially in football and basketball. In a transient area like Atlanta, however, schools are on top of each other due to population clusters and people are more likely to move for a variety of reasons. One of those reasons is for kids to get the best education, and sometimes, to play for the best local program.
"There's probably not a school in the state that doesn't have somebody move in or somebody leave," said Lassiter coach Jep Irwin. "I think it's just a fact of life in high school football, especially in the metro area where parents are willing to move and it's not that far of a move. ... Parents are more willing to do that and they want to take their kids to a place where they can be successful."
Irwin knows, as his program took in five transfers during the off season from area programs. The armada of transfers to Lassiter came just one year after running back Tyren Jones left the Lassiter district to move further south in the eastern part of Cobb County to rival Walton, where Jones has starred the past two seasons. While many in the Trojan Nation were furious about the loss of a future star to a rival program, Irwin can understand why families transfer.
"I think transfers are a fact of life. I think it's the parents' right, if they want to move somewhere and take a kid somewhere, then they just want what's best for their kid," said Irwin. "Obviously, we have a tremendous school just like Walton does, so it's a lot more attractive for someone to think about moving into an area where it's a great place to live and a great school. It's just kind of a trend we're going through right now."
TRANSFER HUBS
While football coaches are just now adjusting to the trend, hoops coaches have perfected the art of the transfer over the last decade or two. Some of the top high school players in the nation move to better high school programs during their careers, sometimes on multiple occasions. Read more... |
Religious banners allowed....For now
By Michael Popke - Athletic Business Newswire
|
The Freedom From Religion Foundation shows no signs of backing off its efforts to eliminate pregame prayers and other symbols of faith from high school sports. After cracking down on school districts in Georgia and Mississippi for what it calls First Amendment violations, the Madison, Wis.-based church-and-state watchdog forced the Kountze Independent School District in southeast Texas to ban the use of red-and-white banners featuring Bible verses through which members of the Kountze High School football team charge when taking the field. The FFRF contacted the district after at least one resident complained about the use of the Bible verses, which change from week to week.
But late last week, a judge issued a temporary restraining order that bars implementation of the ban and allows the school to temporarily continue the tradition. A hearing is slated for Oct. 4, during which both sides in the issue will make their arguments, according to the
.
Superintendent Kevin Weldon, when asked by parents to justify his decision to ban the signs, cites the 2000 Supreme Court case Santa Fe Independent School District v. Doe, in which the nation's highest court ruled that student-initiated prayer at football games was unconstitutional. "It is not a personal opinion of mine," Weldon told KHOU-TV. "My personal convictions are that I am a Christian. ... But I'm also a state employee and Kountze ISD representative. And I was advised that such a practice would be in direct violation of United States Supreme Court decisions." Read more...

Peisch, Morlock, Amoroso making an impact as lone women athletic directors in Marin County Athletic League (CA)
By Alex Tam - MarinIJ.com

Jessica Peisch Novato HS AD
|
When Jessica Peisch arrived to Novato High in 2005, she was a rare breed as the lone female athletic director in the MCAL at the time.
Her experience as a coach, teacher and collegiate athlete more than qualified her for a traditionally male-dominant position. However, her hiring signaled a new development in the league over the next seven years.
Since then, Peisch moved over to the same position at Redwood. Today, the MCAL consists of three female athletic directors after Kelly Morlock was hired at Novato this fall. Christina Amoroso begins her fifth year at Tam.
"There's definitely a movement," Peisch said. "I think definitely people are starting to see that the experience we had, prepared us to be in this leadership role."
The makeup of the league with three out of 10 athletic directors being female is an uncommon trend in high school and at the collegiate level. But the rate continues to grow.
Of the 169 member schools in the North Coast Section, 22 employ female athletic directors - a little more than 13 percent, according to Gil Lemmon, the Commissioner of Athletics for the NCS.
At the NCAA Division I level, that percentage is even lower at 9.2 percent. Of the 347 member schools at the D-I level, 32 employ female athletic directors, including Sandy Barbour at UC Berkeley.
But ask Peisch, Morlock and Amoroso, and their gender has never been discussed or even thought about. Earning their positions were simply natural progressions from their athletic, coaching and teaching careers.
"Going to the MCAL AD meetings, I don't really see the gender part," Amoroso said. "I see the experience part, where you're learning from the experienced ADs. You're learning from the younger ADs, and you're piecing together what makes this job and how you can be successful at it. It's a good collective body of people who are working in the high schools around here." Read more...
