Greetings GADA Members,
The recent National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association National Conference was a tremendous success in Indianapolis. Georgia had many representatives present. Thank you to all who made the effort go. Congratulations to past-presidents Jeff Beggs and Carter Wilson for their presentations at the conference. Also, past-presidents Joe Sanfillippo and Peggy Green were both recognized for national awards.
Now it is our turn. The Georgia Athletic Director's Association State Conference will be here before we know it. Please mark the dates on your calendar: March 24-27 in beautiful Savannah, Georgia. The LTI Classes to be offered will include two 500 level courses, two 600 level courses and three 700 level courses which includes a new course on sports behavior. There will be additional workshops offered, and middle school athletic directors will have great opportunities to learn and network. Conference registrations forms and LTI registration forms are now online to be submitted.
Please examine the addition to our website the "AD Spotlight," located to the left in the tags. A new athletic director will be highlighted each month. Continue to look for our 2012 Hall of Fame class to be announced soon. GADA continues to work for you, our members. Feel free to contact me with any questions.

Some private schools unhappy with the GHSA decision to split the Class A playoffs: Savannah Christian AD Donald Chumley weighs in
From Score Atlanta |
When the GHSA ratified the reclassification for the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons, two major changes were quite apparent: a sixth classification and a playoff split in Class A.Roughly 40 public schools located mostly in south Georgia were ready to defect from the GHSA to form the Georgia Public School Association if their demands of a separate Class A playoff bracket were not heard. The GHSA quickly voted Jan. 10 to split the Class A postseason, and the defection talk immediately died down. The 40 or so schools seemed pleased with the decision, and Georgia high school football fans readied themselves for seven trophies to be handed out starting next year.
However, not everyone was thrilled with the decision to split up Class A's postseason. Several schools including 2011 Class A football champion Savannah Christian were quite upset with the decision. Savannah Christian head football coach and athletic director Donald Chumley raised some concerns with the planned split, which he says was not the way to go.
"The GHSA says they will work it out, but I don't know how," said Chumley Thursday. Chumley worried that the GHSA's direction is unknown at this time. "The GHSA says to wait until March to hear about their playoff format." That may be too late, though, according to Chumley, who said that he and many other Class A private and public schools must wait in order to finish scheduling.

GADA SPOTLIGHT: Dan Duff
Rockmart High School Athletic Director |
Rockmart High School's Dan Duff is an athletic director that sees past wins and losses. It isn't that victories aren't important, but Duff wants Rockmart's athletes to do the right things and develop character through athletics. "I want to see all our coaches and athletes improve as people of excellence," said Duff.
One of the most rewarding things about being an athletic director for Duff is helping others to reach their full potential. The AD since 2004, Duff puts his students and coaches ahead of himself. "It is very rewarding to see a young coach develop and succeed in leading young people to become productive on and off the playing field."
At Rockmart High School, Duff has more than just an AD-to-coach relationship with other Yellow Jacket coaches. Duff has served as the football coach since 2002. Duff realizes that in order for his school's success to continue, Rockmart, not just his football team or the softball has to come first. "I want to give all programs what they need and want, but the whole program has to come first. I make sure that all coaches and players understand that they represent our school and community at all times."
As any AD will tell you, all of the participants are important in high school, something Duff truly believes. "The best athlete is not more important than the worst." Duff also expects his coaches to monitor each player's grades as the coaches should help the athletes succeed in the classroom as well as on the field. "All of our coaches understand that they are teachers first."
Duff offered advice to new athletic directors, saying to make certain all sports are treated fairly. "You (should) hire good people that have great character and that understand that winning records is not the most important thing." He believes the most important thing is what type of influence an AD has on others. "Make sure you as the AD know what you believe and be consistent. Always stand up for the right thing and follow the rules no matter what." Rockmart has done that under Duff's watch, and the athletes are better off for it.
