Georgia Athletic Directors Association Newsletter
Vol. 3 No. 6January 2012
Greetings GADA Members,

The National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association National Conference was a tremendous success in Indianapolis last month. Georgia had many representatives present. Thank you to all who made the effort go. Congratulations to past-presidents Jeff Beggs and Carter Wilson for their presentations at the conference. Also, past-presidents Joe Sanfillippo and Peggy Green were both recognized for national awards.

Now it is our turn. The Georgia Athletic Director's Association State Conference will be here before we know it. Please mark the dates on your calendar: March 24-27 in beautiful Savannah, Georgia. The LTI Classes to be offered will include two 500 level courses, two 600 level courses and three 700 level courses which includes a new course on sports behavior. There will be additional workshops offered, and middle school athletic directors will have great opportunities to learn and network. Conference registrations forms and LTI registration forms are now online to be submitted.

Please examine the addition to our website the "AD Spotlight," located to the left in the tags. A new athletic director will be highlighted each month. Continue to look for our 2012 Hall of Fame class to be announced soon. GADA continues to work for you, our members. Feel free to contact me with any questions.

Response sought in NIAAA Questionaire
We encourage your participation in a national study of high school athletic programs. The research is the first of its kind to be accomplished on a national base, and we are confident that the data will prove very beneficial to school athletic administrators, principals, superintendents, as well as school boards and local communities.

In conjunction with the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) and the National Federation of State High Schools Associations (NFHS), the study is being conducted by Indiana State University.

In order to gain full and accurate information, representation from each state is imperative. Please take time to provide the necessary information from your school or district. Should you have any questions regarding the survey, please contact Mike Blackburn, 317.587.1450.

Thank you in advance for your efforts on behalf of educational athletic programs!

Several south Georgia ADs weigh in on a potential defection from the GHSA
From the Valdosta Daily Times

The reclassification and re-alignment in the Georgia High School Association may not be over yet. At least if some high school principals, athletic directors and coaches have their way.

With the recent moves made by the GHSA, the states primary governing body for high school athletics, one thing remained the same throughout the entire process: private and public high schools will continue to compete against each other, especially at the Class A level, which features over 35 private high schools in the classification alone.

GADA SPOTLIGHT: CHUNK REID
Vidalia High School Athletic Director
You may know Chunk Reid as the extremely successful girls basketball coach that won his 750th game last year and who is tenth in wins on the list of active coaches. However Mr. Reid has done more than just rack up wins (28 straight to start the season last year) and awards such as the Bobby Cremins Georgia High School girls basketball coach of the year last year. He has been the longtime athletic director at Vidalia, something that he finds rewarding.

"Our athletic programs have been very successful and well respected over the years and this is my greatest reward," said Reid. He also said that one of the most rewarding things about being an AD is seeing the athletes and coaches be successful in their endeavors on and off the court.

Mr. Reid walks a fine line between coach and AD, but he has been quite successful in dealing with other coaches as a fellow coach as well as a boss. "We have some of the best coaching staffs in the state. This makes it easy to look out for the best interest of the three parties (coaches, school, players) involved. Through their loyalty and dedication to Vidalia High School, they do what's necessary to be successful."

In fact, serving as both a coach and an AD gives Mr. Reid a better idea of what the coaches need from him. "It puts me in a position to understand their individual coaching needs which in turn makes it easier to be an AD."

As for Mr. Reid's favorite part of being an athletic director, he says it is quite simple: seeing Vidalia win. "This gives me great satisfaction and pride. Being a coaching staff member and knowing in a small way that as an AD I helped the total overall athletic department be a winner."

And Mr. Reid also has a bit of advice for new ADs out there. "Be compassionate to all the sports and their need to be a winner. Sometimes a lot of ADs tend to look over the sports that are non-revenue or not as popular as others, but to the athletes and their parents involved in these sports, it is number one. The total program creates unity and support of the community and the school."

With all of the Fall champions crowned, the Regions Directors Cup standings are updated
From the Georgia Athletic Directors Association site
The GHSA football championships were decided in early December, and with those titles come valuable Regions Directors Cup points. In Class A, Savannah Christian moved into second place overall behind Wesleyan and overtook Landmark Christian in the boys race. Wesleyan remains in first place in the girls race.

In Class AA, Blessed Trinity sits in the No. 1 overall spot, ahead of North Oconee and Westminster, the latter claiming the No. 1 spot in the boys race.

Class AAA finds Allatoona nearly pulling off the sweep as the young school holds the top overall spot and the top girls spot. St. Pius X leads Allatoona by 25 points in the boys race.

Class AAAA has three different leaders with Flowery Branch leading the boys race, Johns Creek No. 1 for the girls and Pope on top of the overall race.

In the highest classification, Walton, thanks in part to a run to the football title game, leads the overall and the boys race. Harrison is atop the girls poll.
