Vol. 3 No. 4November 2011
Greetings GADA Members,

Bob Stinchcomb

Mark your Calendars! Ideas are mounting in order to create the finest selection of speakers, classes, workshops, and award ceremonies for our GADA Spring Conference in Savannah on March 24 - 27, 2012. The NIAAA website is now offering all required LTI courses online as a webinar for CAA certification. Providing one's personal data form meets the CAA standard. An athletic administrator could take the CAA exam at the conference for complete certification. The GADA Hall of Fame inductees will also be announced at that time.

A complete conference schedule can be found on www.gadaonline.net at the end of November. The national NIAAA conference is located in Indianapolis on December 9-13, 2011. Those interested in attending need to register online at www.niaaa.org.

Response sought in NIAAA Questionaire
We encourage your participation in a national study of high school athletic programs. The research is the first of its kind to be accomplished on a national base, and we are confident that the data will prove very beneficial to school athletic administrators, principals, superintendents, as well as school boards and local communities.

In conjunction with the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) and the National Federation of State High Schools Associations (NFHS), the study is being conducted by Indiana State University.

In order to gain full and accurate information, representation from each state is imperative. Please take time to provide the necessary information from your school or district. Should you have any questions regarding the survey, please contact Mike Blackburn, 317.587.1450.

Thank you in advance for your efforts on behalf of educational athletic programs!

High School Sports Are the Number-One Ticket
Mary Helen Sprecher - American Sports Builders Association
Whether they're cheering on their team or booing a ref's call, the fans in the stands at high school games are doing one thing consistently - showing up in big numbers. And whether you're optimistic and attribute that to a lot of school spirit, or whether you're pessimistic and blame it on an economy that has us all searching for less expensive entertainment, it's still a great trend.

The National Federation of State High School Associations has been tracking the numbers of high school athletes for more than 40 years now, but this is the first time it has compiled statistics on those who watch them. According to this first survey, in the school year 2009-10, more fans attended high school basketball and football events - 336 million - than the same sports at the college and professional levels combined (133 million). Wearing multiple hats the new norm
By Norma Engelberg - TellerCountynews.com

State cuts to public education budgets have forced school districts to be creative with their own budgets. Woodland Park RE-2 School District is no exception.

In an effort to keep the cuts as far away from student education as they can, district staff has been wearing more and more hats.

One example of this consolidation of effort is Brian Gustafson. Until last June, he was the Woodland Park High School Activities Director. Starting July 1, he gave the activities director portion of his job to the assistant principals and went back to being the high school's athletics director. Then he added Director of Business Services.

It might not be as much of a stretch for an activities director to take over the district's finance department as one might think once one realizes that Gustafson has a bachelor's degree in business administration from Colorado State University. He also has a master's degree in sports administration from the University of Northern Colorado at Greeley.

"The leadership and other skills I need for both jobs are similar but the tasks go in many different directions," he said. "The only thing typical about each of my days now is that they are all packed."  Read more...

Reclassification process behind schedule
By Zac Taylor - Gainesville Times

Georgia high schools will have to wait a little longer before finding out where they'll be slotted in the next round of realignment.

The Georgia High School Association reclassification process, which will divide teams among six classes for the 2012-14 cycle, was expected to be under way by now, but is running behind schedule.

"The state (Department of Education) did not require the schools to turn in their numbers until Oct. 28," said Georgia High School Association representative Steve Figueroa in an email to The Times. "This is later than usual and puts us about two weeks behind our original schedule."

Richmond County athletics director responds to Hancock Central incident with security
By Wayne Staats - Augusta Chronicle
In response to Friday (October 14) night's skirmish between Hancock Central and Warren County, the Richmond County Board of Education amended its own post-game policy this week.

"When things like this happen, you look at your policy and see what you can do to prevent something like this from happening," Richmond County athletics director George Bailey said. "You realize there's always a possibility."

That possibility occurred when Warren County head football coach David Daniel was struck in the head with a helmet by a Hancock Central player following his team's 21-2 win in Sparta, Ga.

Potomac School AD Rob Lee can't help but be busy
By Toni L. Sandys - The Washington Post

As it became more apparent that the Panthers would win the game, Potomac School Athletic Director Rob Lee started to make his way through the players on the sideline. Everyone he passed received either a high-five or a pat on the back. Lee, also the school's junior varsity coach, wiped away tears as he hugged junior Sean Spasoff.

"This is my 22nd year here, so I've known these guys since they were in pre-k and coming through the school," Lee said. "So I know them all pretty well and their families."

Glendale, AZ AD Under Fire After Recent Incident
By Kristena Hansen - Arizona Republic

A referee claims Deer Valley

High School's athletic director slapped him and made an offensive comment last week after the school's varisty football team lost a tense game by one point, according to a Glendale police report.

Mark Mendoze filed the report Monday, seeking to press charges against John Allen for his alleged misconduct at Ironwood High School in Glendale last Friday night.
