REGIONS DIRECTORS CUP: Final Fall Standings

By Stephen Black - Score Atlanta
buford AA champs

We're a third of the way home in the 2010-2011 Regions Directors Cup race. The Georgia Athletics Directors Association has presented the award since 1999-2000 to recognize the very best athletics programs in Georgia. Thus far in the school year, some of the traditional powers are in control of their respective classifications while some upstarts are also making an appearance at the top of the standings.

In Class 5A, perennial powers Collins Hill and Walton (who have combined to win the last five cups) are in second and third place, respectively. But 2003-2004 champion Brookwood is in first due to their state titles in football and boys cross country. Brookwood leads on the boys side thus far while Harrison is leading the girls standings. Collins Hill's state title in softball and Walton's volleyball and cross country state championships have kept them close to the Broncos. More...

Ideas that work from the NIAAA

"Complaint/Concern Form"

(Timothy Arndt, Assistant Principal/Activities Director, Ralston High School, Ralston, Nebraska) - I developed a complaint/concern form to keep track of phone calls from parents and other community members. The form is simple and easy to file. I keep the form next to my phone and document all phone calls. This helps to establish whether there are any patterns in certain sports with coaches or sponsors. I am able to follow-up regarding the concern and get back to the caller within 24 hours. This documentation helps when I am doing evaluations and when removal of personnel becomes necessary.

"Roster Day"

(Dr. William Beattie, Coordinator of Athletics, Montgomery County Public Schools, Rockville, Maryland) - In our multiple high school district, this practice has solved the problem of getting accurate rosters from our coaches. Some time prior to the first contest date we designate a "Roster Day". All head coaches must turn in to their athletic director an accurate roster for their team. Failure to do so means that team cannot practice or participate until the roster is turned into the athletic director on the appropriate form. Our Principals support this best practice.

Taking It On The Chin: Can strap-on sensors help prevent brain injuries in football?
David Epstein - Sports Illustrated

As more is learned about the risk of concussions in football, from the NFL down to high school and youth leagues-where players are particularly vulnerable-the importance of a quick and proactive response to any suspected head injury is becoming ever clearer. What is also becoming clear is that relying on a high school football player to take himself out of the game after a concussive shot to the head is a losing medical strategy. Might as well ask if he wants to play in a tutu. Read more...
