JeffBeggsWelcome to our E-newsletter. My name is Jeff Beggs and I am the new President of the Georgia Athletic Directors Association for 2010-2011.

I hope you will take a minute to read through this newsletter and visit our website, www.gadaonline.net . There is a tremendous amount of information that will be useful to you as you do your job as a professional athletic administrator. In our profession, you wear many hats. Our responsibility to you is to help you and your school be successful as you perform your all of your daily duties.

2011 Conference Dates Announced
March 19-22, 2011

2011 High School Female/Male Scholarship Award
Nomination forms are now available
The High School Female/Male Scholarship Award will be presented to a senior who has represented his/her sport(s) in both performance and leadership. Each winner will receive a $1000.00 scholarship award.

Please complete and mail the following nomination form with one letter of recommendation attached to the form. Additional information and incomplete entries will not be considered.

In the 21st century, Title IX gives, takes from sports

21st century title IXSEBRING, FL - The timing of Title IX was auspicious for Terry Quarles, who graduated from Bristol High School in 1972. The civil rights law came into effect in her freshman year.

"Before that, there weren't any girls' sports in Virginia," Quarles remembered.

So, if it weren't for Title IX's gender-equality mandate, she wouldn't be the athletic director at Sebring High School?

"Absolutely," said Quarles. "I always wanted to play sports, and I wanted to coach, even back then."

Today, it's arguable whether the 202 girls who participate in Blue Streak varsity softball, basketball, cross country, cheerleading, golf, soccer, swimming, tennis, track, volleyball and weightlifting would be allowed on the fields or the courts or in the pools if Title IX hadn't passed four decades ago.

What's clear is that the battle for gender equality is still being waged: in November National Women's Law Center filed suit against a dozen school districts across the nation. Florida wasn't included, but the NWLC intended the dozen to represent every public high school in America.

The NWLC argues that 4.4 million boys - but only 3.1 million girls - play high school sports. Therefore, there must be a funding inequity. More...

Beginning July 1, 2011, NIAAA membership dues will increase from $60 to $80.  Join both the GADA and NIAAA before January 1st for $100 ($104 using paypal) and save!  We encourage members to belong to both the GADA and the NIAAA. The GADA welcomes new Middle School Rep to the Board
Joining the GADA Board of Directors as our "Middle School" representative is Mike Gumbinger.

Gumbinger Mike is the Athletic Director at Dutchtown Middle School Hampton, GA. Mike is also the PE/Health teacher. Mike graduated from Florida Bible College with a BA degree and earned his Masters degree from Concordia University (2009) in Athletic Administration and Coaching.

Gumbinger has been teaching for 28 years and has served as an Athletic Director for 26 years. Mike taught at Clayton Christian School (Morrow GA.) for 8 years. He opened Austin Road Middle School (Ellenwood, GA.) and held the AD position there for 11 years.

Logo for web Unfortunately, your last opportunity to catch your breath has come and gone! We hope you all had a wonderful holiday season!

  1. Schedule and disseminate agendas for upcoming athletic coaches meetings.
  2. Check, check and double check winter sports eligibility forms.
  3. Attend scheduled region meeting.
  4. Begin academic and residency checks for upcoming spring sports for eligibility purposes.
  5. Schedule spring sports picture day.
  6. Meet with current winter sports booster clubs.
  7. Review and audit concessions receipts and revenues.
  8. Review and adjust if necessary all basketball, wrestling and swimming game day preparation as needed.
  9. Check spring sports scoreboards to insure that they are operational.
  10. Attend weekly administrative meetings.
  11. Inform faculty on upcoming athletic events. Talk about the positive things that are happening in the athletic program.
  12. Update your athletic website.
  13. Finalize fall sports schedules for next year.
  14. Finalize wrestling weight class rosters for upcoming area duals.
  15. Update transportation of any changes or adjustments to winter team travel schedules.
  16. Pay outstanding invoices from fall sports.
  17. Review region standings for seeding possibilities for upcoming basketball tournaments.
  18. Review spring sports officiating schedules and associations. Give association President or booking secretary a phone call to confirm all schedules.
  19. Forward spring sports schedules and assignments to all gate workers.

This should give you a start in your preparation for the month of January. Good luck!

I use a three-ring binder which I prepare and distribute to my coaches. It includes all of the necessary paperwork, important contracts, schedules, etc. that will assist the coach throughout the season. As the season progresses, updates are periodically provided for them to add to the book.

We need your help!
dome helmet The Atlanta Falcons are requesting your school's football helmet to add to the GHSA Helmet Wall at the Georgia Dome.

Currently there are 69 schools whose helmets are not included in the display. Click here for a list of missing schools as of 8/1/10.
