Title IX complaint filed against Henry County Schools
By Michael Carvell - The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

A complaint was filed against Henry County Schools on Wednesday for failing to provide high school girls with equal opportunities to play sports in violation of Title IX, according to the National Women's Law Center.

According to the NWLC, there is a 12.5-percent gap between the percentage of girls enrolled at Henry County Schools and percentage of girls who are athletes. This translates to 430 fewer opportunities for girls to play sports than boys, according to the organization.

Henry County officials had yet to return a request for comment on Wednesday afternoon.

"Girls and Women in Sports Luncheon"
Jean Kinn Ashen, CAA, Athletic Director, North Salinas High School, Salinas, Kansas

One of our goals is to encourage female athletes to stay involved in athletics through officiating, coaching, training or administration. Annually in February, we host a "National Girls and Women in Sports" luncheon for every senior female student athlete in our school. Distinguished school and community persons are invited guests. Emphasis is placed on celebrating the success of Title IX and honoring Flo Hyman. A keynote speaker shares with the student athletes the benefits of athletic participation. The underclass athletes are involved in decorating the banquet room and helping prepare the luncheon food. Staff is given an opportunity to participate by financially sponsoring the lunch for one or more of the student athletes.

No Excuses
By Bruce Brown, Proactive Coaching
Bruce Brown The following article was taken from the Proactive Coaching booklet entitled, Turning Around Athletic Programs

One of the common traits of successful athletic programs is that they have eliminated excuses.

To step up and change a losing culture, everyone must eliminate all excuses:
The following are examples of excuses I have heard from coaches, administration and parents.  I am not saying the suggestions are easy, but great coaches find a way to succeed regardless of circumstances.
"It is hard to find coaches" - If you find it difficult to attract experienced, successful coaches then administrators must be able to identify people with potential. Then they must focus on training, supporting and mentoring them through the growing process.  Administrators cannot settle for people just filling the job.  They must constantly be looking for potential coaches and recruit them.  There is a district in California who constantly searches for great coaches, recruits them hard and then offers them transitional housing when they move.
"Our kids are too rich" - There is a feeling that rich kids are spoiled and not hard workers.  All kids are all capable of competing hard and learning the lessons that coaches intentionally teach.  Hold kids accountable to those standards.  Love them enough to accept them where they are and raise them to a new level.
"Our kids are too poor" - The comment is made to say that "we have no support" or they are "too tough to accept coaching".  Garbage, some of the toughest kids and best team people are young people who have not been handed a life.  Same thing - Love them enough to accept them where they are and raise them to a new level. Friday Night Feats!
State Farm Insurance Video Contest!
State Farm is committed to being there for life's big moments across our communities.  That's why we're pleased to announce the return of Friday Night Feats, our national contest to reward schools for their most dazzling moments on the gridiron.

Just like last year, coaches, fans, or students can win up to $17,500 for their high school by submitting video capturing that show stopping play.  The contest begins August 27 with the grand prize winners - as voted by the fans - announced in December.

Last year's No. 1 pick, Mt. Mansfield Union High School in Jericho, Vt., was able to buy a scoreboard, track and turf protective mats, the foundation for a press box, and enough sideline and field equipment for their new football field, getting them up to speed for their first home game.Jacket www.fridaynightfeats.com

We value your comments and feedback. We encourage you to submit articles and items of interest for the newsletter and the new website.

Sincerely,

Gary Long, CMAA
