Elmer B. Morrow, 88: Was DeKalb schools' first AD
By Rick Badie - The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Elmer Morrow worked only for DeKalb County schools in a career that spanned nearly 40 years.

He was hired as a physical education teacher for Druid Hills High. He coached football and basketball, too. In hoops, his teams won state championships in 1953, '54 and '57. His Red Devils football team made it to the 1957 state playoffs, though Valdosta prevailed.

"He was a good football coach, but he was a better basketball coach," said Terry Hodges of Anniston, Ala., a Druid Hills assistant football and wrestling coach in the late 1950s.

"But he taught them what they needed to know, and what they needed to do to be decent players in either sport."

Randy Brown, a 1960 Druid Hills grad, was in eighth and ninth grade when he managed Morrow's football team for two years.

"He was strict and he was a disciplinarian," said Mr. Brown, of the Fannin County community of  Mineral Bluff. "He was very serious. The best word to describe him would be intense. He was a good coach." Read more...

Step into a typically crazy week in the life of a high school athletic director
By Mike White, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

So what exactly does one do as a high school athletic director? That question is sometimes asked of John Grogan and Bill Cleary. It might be better to ask what don't they do?Job descriptions for high school athletic directors are drastically different than they were 30 to 40 years ago. No longer is their main job to simply make schedules. With the advent of more sports, and other factors, Grogan said, "To do this job right, you're working more than 60 hours a week a lot of times."Grogan, 42, is in his 11th year as Mt. Lebanon's athletic director. It is a full-time job in which he is in charge of 27 varsity sports. Before coming to Mt. Lebanon, he was West Allegheny's athletic director for three years. Copycat logos are pitting high schools and colleges in a trademark turf war
By James Wagner - Washington Post
During the 2008 presidential campaign, CNN anchorman Lou Dobbs hosted his evening broadcast from the gymnasium of Freedom-South Riding High in Loudoun County. Painted on the wall was the school's official logo - a black and gold eagle with wings spread open and flashing its talons.

One of those watching on TV was a graduate of Georgia Southern University who recognized that the eagle was the same one used by the university's athletic department and called the school to alert it.

When word reached Lee Davis, Georgia Southern's associate vice president for legal affairs, he printed a copy of Freedom-South Riding's logo from its Web site and compared it to the university's design. "I blew them up and put them on top of each other," Davis recalled. "And no question it was a tracing."

Davis contacted the three-year-old high school and demanded that it stop using the eagle. Calling it "an inadvertent error," Freedom-South Riding has since removed the logo from team uniforms, helmets and other gear. Freedom paid Georgia Southern $1 for the use of the eagle for 10 years on items that were too expensive to immediately replace, such as the gym's wall and floor, according to school officials.  Read more...

"Student-athlete Eligibility Card"
By Larry Goins, CAA, Athletic Director, Sierra Vista High School, Las Vegas, NV

Student athletes, when trying out for a sport, must get a computer generated card from the athletic director's office. This card is given to the student athlete when all of their paperwork is completed and on file. This informs the coach that all of the necessary paperwork has been submitted, that the student athlete meets all eligibility requirements and can participate in practice. The coach then uses the card to record all uniforms and equipment checked out at the beginning of the season and that all equipment is checked in at the end of the season. The card is then returned to the office of the athletic director. A student athlete is not issued a card for the next season until the card for the previous season has been turned in to the athletic director.

Friday Night Feats!
State Farm Insurance Video Contest!
State Farm is committed to being there for life's big moments across our communities.  That's why we're pleased to announce the return of Friday Night Feats, our national contest to reward schools for their most dazzling moments on the gridiron.

Just like last year, coaches, fans, or students can win up to $17,500 for their high school by submitting video capturing that show stopping play.  The contest begins August 27 with the grand prize winners - as voted by the fans - announced in December.

Last year's No. 1 pick, Mt. Mansfield Union High School in Jericho, Vt., was able to buy a scoreboard, track and turf protective mats, the foundation for a press box, and enough sideline and field equipment for their new football field, getting them up to speed for their first home game.Jacket www.fridaynightfeats.com
