2010 Regions Bank Director's Cup Winners

The Georgia Athletic Directors Association and Regions Bank are pleased to announce the winners of the 10th Annual Regions Director's Cup Awards.  Each year, the GADA awards points to high schools competing in up to 25 different sports. At the conclusion of the school year, points are tallied based on each school's best eight sports results in boys, girls and overall combined in the state tournaments.

This is the first time that Regions Bank has been the title sponsor in the 10-year history of the award. The Director's Cup recognizes excellence and superior performance throughout the entire season of high school athletics.

Clayton AD Bob Brannon heads off to retirement
Clayton News Daily
Those school bells ringing throughout the halls around Clayton County signified something really big Friday-the end of the academic year and the start of a two-month summer vacation.

It also meant something else. The end of an era as Clayton County Athletic Director Bob Brannon walked out of his office at Tara Stadium for the last time and headed into retirement.

For Brannon, it was the official end of a career in education that started in the 1960s and spanned part of five decades.
The former college basketball player wore many hats as his career took him down the educational path. Read More...
Henry's County's Miller says good bye to Warhawk nation
Clayton News Daily
Walking into Henry County athletic director Chuck Miller's office is a little bit like taking a trip back in time.
Not only does Miller have a radio tuned to an oldies rock and roll station, playing everything from the Beatles to Elvis Presley, his office located just inside the school's gymnasium is adorned with pictures, plaques and basketballs encased in glass, signifying some of his milestone victories from years in the coaching business.
It's a little personal "Chuck Miller museum" and it reflects positively on a career spent both as a basketball coach and athletic director. Read More...

Jacket "Communication Notebook"
(Donna Brickley, CAA, Athletic Director, Notre Dame Academy, Hingham, Masachusetts) - I use a three-ring binder which I prepare and distribute to my coaches. It includes all of the necessary paperwork, important contracts, schedules, etc. that will assist the coach throughout the season. As the season progresses, updates are periodically provided for them to add to the book.

"Girls and Women in Sports Luncheon"
(Jean Kinn Ashen, CAA, Athletic Director, North Salinas High School, Salinas, Kansas) - One of our goals is to encourage female athletes to stay involved in athletics through officiating, coaching, training or administration. Annually in February, we host a "National Girls and Women in Sports" luncheon for every senior female student athlete in our school. Distinguished school and community persons are invited guests. Emphasis is placed on celebrating the success of Title IX and honoring Flo Hyman. A keynote speaker shares with the student athletes the benefits of athletic participation. The underclass athletes are involved in decorating the banquet room and helping prepare the luncheon food. Staff is given an opportunity to participate by financially sponsoring the lunch for one or more of the student athletes.

"A Simple Approach to Time Management"
(Paul Jansen, CAA, Student Activities and Athletics Coordinator, Fairfax County Public Schools, Fairfax, Virginia) - In a normal eight-hour day, using the following outline has made the daily responsibilities of my position as athletic administrator more manageable.

Hours 1-2 - Get out and greet the masses! Spend time getting to your coaches, student-athletes and staff. Find out what issues are important to them and listen. It is too early in the morning to solve problems, but not too early to gather information. Go where there is coffee or a copy machine. Visit teacher lounges, classrooms or offices in the building. You will be surprised how just your presence can solve many issues.

Hours 3-4 - As the school day has settled in, so should you. Get some paperwork completed in the office. We usually have an idea of what is happening in the building, so it is time to write a letter, place a request, finish a report or begin/continue work on a long-term project.

Hours 5-6 - Return phone calls and e-mails. Morning emotions have calmed down and most people are more receptive after a good lunch. Look through mail and projects while trying to finish paperwork you can before the end of the school day.

Hours 7-8 - Close the day by returning to your most valuable resources, the athletes and coaches. Share what you have learned and be very visible. Remember to smile.

We value your comments and feedback. We encourage you to submit articles and items of interest for the newsletter and the new website.

Sincerely,

Jeff Beggs, CMAA - President
