Georgia Athletic Directors Association Newsletter
Vol. 1 No. 7 February 2010
Greetings!

Carter Wilson
February is here and Spring sports are just around the corner.  If you have missed any of the earlier newsletters or have just been too busy to read them, you will be pleased to know that all of the newsletters are now archived for your convenience.

IMPORTANT
In the next few days many of you will receive a visit from your local Regions Bank representative.  I urge you to take a few minutes to meet with them personally to receive your Regions Director's Cup Winter Standings poster.  In areas where Regions doesn't have a branch or representative you will receive the posters via US Mail.  Regions is an important part of making the Director's Cup possible.  Regions is committed Georgia high school athletics and building relationships within our communities. Please display the posters prominently in your schools!

Our annual conference in Savannah is rapidly approaching (March 20-23).  We look forward to seeing each of you.

Have a great month!

Sincerely,

Carter Wilson, CAA

NIAAA Webinar Leadership Training Courses Via the Internet
We are pleased to announce that the NIAAA will be webinar teaching LTC 501, 502, 504 via the internet in the spring of 2010.   The athletic administrator will be able to view the course from the convenience of their home or office.  Administrators will also have the opportunity to pose live questions and the class can be divided into discussion groups with the capability of receiving reports from each groups.  What better way to take a class?  There will be no travel time and no travel costs (gas, meals or lodging).

Our suggestion would be to use the computer that is connected to the greatest bandwidth (DSL, Cable or T-1 line) which could be at your school if you do not have high speed internet connection at home.  However you can get the broadcast with a 56K / dial up modem typically used with home computers.  The only issue here is that this type of internet connection will be slower since pictures/PowerPoint take longer to download.

Equipment Needed
Personal Computer with sound card, speakers and a microphone (Inexpensive $10 microphone will work fine which can be purchased at any computer store)

Course Dates   (Spring-2010)
501  Mondays      April 5 and 12
502  Wednesdays April 7 and 14
504  Thursdays    April 8 and 15

Course Times
The Courses will be taught by experienced faculty.  Each class will be a 150 minute session, taught on two consecutive Monday, Wednesday or Thursday evenings.

7:30 pm to 9:30 pm Eastern      4:30 pm to 6:30 pm Pacific
6:30 pm to 8:30 pm Central       2:30 pm to 4:30 pm Alaska Time
5:30 pm to 7:30 pm Mountain    1:30 pm to 3:30 pm Hawaii Time

Registration
The NIAAA has established a fee of $100 for each webinar course.  Download the enrollment form from the NIAAA website www.niaaa.org and use your credit card or pay by check returning the form with payment to the NIAAA, 9100 Keystone Crossing, Suite 650, Indianapolis, Indiana 46240.  When using a credit card you can fax the enrollment form to 317-587-1451.

Registration deadline
Deadline for all classes will be March 12, 2010 .  Course manuals will be sent to you prior to the first class.

Certificates and Missed Classes
Certificates will be mailed to those that complete the entire course.  You must be able to participate in both sessions in order to receive credit for completing the course and receive a certificate of completion. There will be no opportunity to make up a missed class session.

For additional information contact the NIAAA office at 317-587-1450 or pconrad@niaaa.org

The 2010 Vincent J. Dooley Awards are right around the corner!

Vince DooleyEach year, every high school in Georgia is invited to select one male and one female senior athlete to receive the Dooley Award. The award recipients are chosen for their distinguished individual character, outstanding teamwork, and citizenship.

Student-athletes are nominated by their athletic directors. If you're a parent, teacher, coach, or friend of an outstanding student-athlete, feel free to suggest him or her to your athletic director. The nomination deadline is February 28th.

All award recipients are reviewed by a selection committee, who choose 10 boys and 10 girls as finalists for the Dooley Scholarship. The Dooley Scholarship is then presented to one male and one female athlete. All recipients are invited to attend a banquet at Turner Field, after which the 20 finalists are recognized on the field before an Atlanta Braves game.

The purpose of the awards and scholarships is to call attention to the high esteem in which the values of hard work, sportsmanship, and community service are held, so that they may become a stronger part of the ethos of participation in Georgia high school sports.

Nomination forms can be downloaded from the Athletes for a Better World website:www.abw.org/dooleyscholarship

Parents - Helping Your Athlete by "Releasing"
Bruce E. Brown
Bruce Brown
This article is a portion of a Proactive Coaching booklet, presentation and DVD entitled, The Role of Parents in Athletics.

The involvement of parents in the athletic experience of their children is a given. Without question, all parents should be part of this area of their children's growth. Their involvement affects their own child, the coach, the rest of the team, the other parents and the officials. This booklet focuses on the parent's role from the perspective of the athlete. For more than three decades I asked my players a series of questions. The purpose of the questions was in give me feedback on what I could do to improve their athletic experience.  In this process, I learned many things that helped me as a coach, but even more that helped as a father. These concepts are things that young people would like to tell their parents but probably never will. It is how we can show respect for them in this arena called athletics.  Athletics is one place we need to meet their needs and not ours.
The presentation includes things that adults can do before, during and after competition that will allow the athlete to perform to their best and to create good memories. This booklet and DVD is a way of giving back to three decades of great young people on my teams. Read more...

Applebee's Gives Back To More Than 890 High School Coaches in the Greater Atlanta Area
Applebee's Celebrates Coaches
applebees 'Applebee's Celebrates Coaches' at 26 high schools with free entrees, year-round discounts and fundraisers --

ATLANTA (Jan. 19, 2010) - Starting in February 2010, Applebee's in greater Atlanta will thank nearly 900 local high school athletic coaches for their tireless devotion to the area's youth through a mix of activities, while also giving school supporters aneasy way to raise funds for the coaches' teams.

The initiative, titled "Applebee's Celebrates Coaches," kicks off during "Coaches Week," which Gov. Sonny Perdue has proclaimed as Feb. 1-7, 2010, throughout the state of Georgia.  Last year was the state's inaugural "Coaches Week."

Applebee's invited all public high schools in the greater Atlanta counties it serves to join in the celebration. Twenty-six high schools in 12 counties signed up, with several scheduling fundraisers in the restaurants during the week.

Each coach from participating high schools will be recognized with a coupon for one free entrée at Applebee's to use during "Celebrate Coaches Week"; a certificate of appreciation; and an "Applebee's Celebrates Coaches" discount card (which provides him or her with a year-round 10-percent discount on food purchases).

Every school hosting a fundraiser received invitations from Applebee's to distribute to students, parents and school supporters so that - when recipients bring in those invitations throughout the school's designated fundraising event during "Celebrate Coaches Week" - 15 percent of their guest checks will be donated back to the high schools.  Also, Applebee's invited each participating high school to submit a photo of its coaches to be hung in the restaurant of its choice.

Applebee's has designated a specific day for each of the high schools hosting fundraisers as part of the program:

High School   Date/Time              Applebee's Location
Spalding          Feb. 1, 11 am-9 pm   1647 North Expwy, Griffin
Woodland        Feb. 2, 11 am-10 pm 185 Cherokee Pl, Cartersville
Berkmar          Feb. 3, 5 pm-9 pm    2095 Pleasant Hill Rd, Duluth
Clarke Central  Feb. 3, 11am-9 pm    2226 West Broad St, Athens

The high schools participating in "Applebee's Celebrates Coaches" are:

Banks County - Banks County High School
Bartow County - Woodland High School
Cherokee County Schools - Cherokee, Creekview, Etowah, Sequoyah, River Ridge and Woodstock high schools
Clarke County - Cedar Shoals and Clarke Central high schools
Douglas County - Alexander High School (Football Coaches Only)
Fayette County - Fayette County High School
Floyd County - Model and Pepperell high schools
Gwinnett County - Mountain View, Peachtree Ridge and Berkmar high schools
Henry County - Henry County and Stockbridge high schools
Paulding County - East Paulding, Hiram, North Paulding, Paulding County and South Paulding high schools
Spalding County - Spalding High School
Walton County - Walnut Grove High School

"We hope this initiative reminds local residents to celebrate how the coaches in their lives have affected them for the better, and to reach out and say thanks," says Ashley Sasher, community relations and events manager for Applebee's.

On Feb. 1, Applebee's will host a kick-off luncheon at its restaurant at 130 Perimeter Center Place in Atlanta for county and high school athletic directors from 12-2 p.m. to thank them for participating.

Last year, Applebee's launched the program in Henry and Cobb counties.  After a successful first year, Applebee's expanded the program to all its greater Atlanta neighborhoods in 2010.

Applebee's "Dining to Donate" program - the fundraising element of the program where 15 percent of guest check totals (excluding tax and gratuity) from participating diners is donated back to the hosting organization - is open to any nonprofit or school.
To learn more about "Dining to Donate",  visit www.ApplebeesAtlanta.com or www.ApplebeesATL.com and click on the "About Us" tab and then the "Fundraising" link at the top.
