Greetings!
Welcome to this month's issue of the GADA newsletter. The fall session is now over and the first standings for the Regions Director's Cup have been posted. Winter has arrived with a roar as the temperatures have fallen but school spirit is as high as ever!
As we welcome the new year we are still very excited about our own Lucia Norwood's induction to the NIAAA hall of fame. Those of us who were on hand in Dallas in December for the occasion could not be more proud of Lucia's well deserved honor and national recognition. In addition, past president Tommy Marshall received the NFHS Citation award. You can find photos from the conference here.
The GADA Annual Conference is rapidly approaching. We hope to see a lot of new faces along with the familiar at this year's event at the Hilton Desoto in Savannah. You'll find all the information and registration forms on the website.Sincerely, Carter Wilson, CAA GADA President |

Tommy Marshall Receives NFHS Citation Award NIAAA National Conference, Dallas, TX
|
Congratulations to Marist Athletic Director Tommy Marshall who was
recognized by the NFHS as a Citation Award recipient at the National
AD Conference that was held in Dallas last December. Each Year the
National Federation of State High School Associations presents Citation
Awards to outstanding athletic administrators in recognition of
contributions to interscholastic athletics at the local, state and
national levels. Pictured with his wife Dana
There are 8 Citation Awards given annually to athletic directors across the nation. Tommy currently serves on the GADA Board as a Past president and serves on the NIAAA Board as well. The real reason he won the award is that he has been blessed because he was a teammate of Jeff Beggs at Furman University!

Being a Team Leader Requires Being Loyal Bruce E. Brown
|
This article was adapted from the booklet Captains - 7 Ways to Lead Your Team - the booklet was written for team leaders and is one of the four topics covered at the Captains and Coaches Workshops. The seven concepts of leadership in the booklet are a job description for captains. Don't leave leadership to chance - give your leaders the responsibility and a blueprint for success. Leadership Concept # 5: Be the first to PROTECT AND DEFEND your team and be the last to critical. Loyalty If you cannot understand and demonstrate loyalty, step out of leadership. Before you accept a leadership position, you need to understand that being a leader often makes you a target for unfair criticism. Being strong and decisive will attract some people but it may also alienate some people. There are times when leaders need to be able stand on their own, but honestly, it is always nice to have allies. Allies are those people who are loyal to you. Leaders who are loyal, usually gain loyalty in return. Learn to demonstrate loyalty before you should expect it in return. Loyalty occasionally requires that teammates speak up to defend each other. It requires that they hold together to take on the pressures that come with being a team. Loyalty builds trust. Loyalty is belief in each other, and that allows teammates to lift each other up, to magnify individual strengths and diminish individual weaknesses. Click Here to read more... |
For the love of the game Keith Amemiya turned in his legal-eagle wings to help young athletes soar
|
There's a lot to be said for the life of an attorney. Keith Amemiya watches his last state football championship game as Hawaii High School Athletic Association executive director from a tunnel at Aloha Stadium. Amemiya will be stepping down at the end of the academic year.
Pick one, any one, who is a Punahou graduate, and picture the stylish downtown office and a challenging, yet lush life in first class. It was all in the grasp of a one-time track kid from Punahou. When Keith Amemiya left the world of law in 1998, it wasn't for a pay raise, that's for sure. Then 32, he became the first executive director of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association who did not have extensive coaching and athletic administration experience. In fact, he was an outsider who didn't fit the normal circle of decision-makers in the hierarchy of high school athletics. Read more... |
