ADs have a wish list By Bill Higgins - Cape Cod Online
A high school athletic director's day begins early, ends
late and is filled with a multitude of duties. There are schedules to be made
for officials, makeup dates and bus trips. There are meetings with coaches,
students and fellow administrators. There are budgets to manage. In between,
some also teach classes.
And, of course, there are the actual games. There could be
field hockey, soccer, cross country, volleyball, swimming, golf and football
contests on the docket ... all in one day. More... |

By Andy Thompson, The (Appleton, Wis.) Post-Crescent
TOWN OF MENASHA, Wis. - Mike Heideman is feeling a bit out of his element these days.

for yet another basketball season, Heideman is learning the ropes of
being a high school athletic director.
Rather than working on offensive and defensive
schemes, he's confirming bus schedules, making sure referees are in
place, scheduling games into 2010 and ensuring that student-athletes
don't have eligibility problems. More... |

NIAAA "Ideas that work" Spotlight
"Academic Athlete Awards"
|
(Joe Haines, Athletic Director, Konowa Hills High School, Grand Rapids, MI) - Starting in the fall of 1995 our athletic boosters and the athletic department combined to create a new award - Academic Athlete - that honors our student-athletes. This award is given to student-athletes on all levels who meet the following criteria: successfully completed the season; were not suspended during the season; received a grade point of at least 3.3 during the term. Student-athletes who meet the criteria receive an Academic Athlete T-shirt and certificate for their portfolios. All student-athletes who receive this award are listed in our district newsletter. Student-athletes may receive a T-shirt only once per school year, but may have their names listed as often as they qualify. The awards are presented at our end-of-season athletic banquets.
Each month we'll bring you an "ideas that work" postings from the NIAAA website.
