Parent Talk:
Here's what parents are saying about their experience at YouthZone:
|
"I thought the YouthZone case managers were going to be very strict and insensitive, but I found myself thinking they were kind people, very helpful, sweet and patient. The experience gave me a better understanding, and I am building a better relationship with my daughter."
"My son seems to be doing better, opening up is hard especially at the age of 13. He is a great kid and I'm proud of him."
"The staff was absolutely fantastic! My child was educated about why not to get into trouble, rather than just being punished. I think he actually enjoyed the experience."

This month, I'm excited to share some of the great things happening with our Pals Mentoring Program!
Pals is a big part of what we do here at YouthZone because we know that having an adult or older teen actively engaged in the lives of young people can alter the way they see the world and themselves. It can be the difference between following the wrong crowd, and steering clear of that trouble; it can mean the difference between being benched for bad grades, and making the honor roll; and it can simply mean having someone to share with, instead of sitting home alone.
Our Pals program operates from Carbondale to Parachute and we match kids in Kindergarten through 8th grade with a teen Pal or adult Pal mentor.
The program is community-based, meaning we look for broad participation from volunteers in each community -- and as you might imagine, there are never too many mentors!
Charles Richardson is the new YouthZone Pals case manager in Carbondale (located in our beautiful office space in the new Third Street Center). Charles is joined by new Pals case manager Leanne Worton, in Rifle, and long-time Pals Coordinator Patty Schaffner, in Glenwood Springs.
Phew! Lots of new folks doing great work -- stop by and say hello.

YouthZone E-Newsletter
They're baaa-aack! The tell-tale signs of back-to school season are everywhere as nearly 76 million Americans make their way back into the classrooms. Here in the Roaring Fork Valley and the West End of Garfield County, approximately 10,000 kids are either back in school or headed there soon. It's a busy time for schools and families -- and at YouthZone we're gearing up to help. Fall often finds families intent on making some positive changes, schools who want to help their students be more responsible young people, and communities who want to get kids on the right track.
In this e-newlsetter you'll hear about our free parent consults for the month of September (yes, we said "free") and an outstanding half-day workshop with renowned author and parent educator, Jim Fay. Plus parenting classes for all kinds of families, school-based programs for youth and more. Read on for more ways to kick off the school year on the right foot. |
Karrie & Jason Fletcher Pucker Up for YouthZone
Winners of the annual Kiss n' Squeal Fundraiser

YouthZone's 20th anniversary Kiss n' Squeal Fundraiser proved to be one of the most successful fundraising campaigns ever! Our teams of PIG candidates pounded the pavement for over a month and wound up raising nearly $150,000. The lucky winner who rounded up the most votes and earned the right to pucker up to a pig? None other than Team Alpine Bank, Jason and Karrie Fletcher.
After raising more than $44,000 Jason and Karrie earned the, er, privilege of kissing a pig in front of a sell-out crowd at the Grand Finale August 11th in Two Rivers Park. A brief but torrential rainstorm sent spectators fleeing, but a double rainbow encircled our winning team as they locked lips with Wilbur.
Thanks to all of the temas who made this our biggest Kiss n' Squeal event ever!

Highlight: Free Parent Consults
Yes, you read that right -- FREE! During the month of September we want to say thank you to the communities and people who made our summer fundrasier such a success. More than 400 donors participated this year and because of that generosity, we were able to raise more than $145,000 to help with our youth and family programs from Aspen to Parachute.
Now it's our turn to say thanks. YouthZone's Parent Consults are just one of the many programs we offer. This 50 minute session, normally just $35, offer parents a chance to visit with one of YouthZone's parent educators to develop a plan of action for families. From substance use and abuse concerns, to misbehavior in school, to taming the toddler years, our parent educators are here to help. You'll leave feeling relaxed and confident that there are resources available to help -- no matter how big or how small your concerns are.
If you or someone you know could benefit from a YouthZone Parent Consult, call us today at 945-9300 to schedule an appointment.

Your YouthZone
"How do we use YouthZone at Aspen Middle School? Kids don't come with instructions and each family must navigate the joys and difficulties of parenting using methods that make sense to them. YouthZone provides both a forum and a skill set for parenting that can, when merged with other elements of a community-- education, recreation, business, government, arts, culture and faith based opportunities -- contribute to raising healthy and well adjusted young people. It takes a village to raise healthy children and Youthzone provides an element to our village that is found nowhere else."
