Parents: What You Focus On Grows |
| At YouthZone, we try to stay focused on the strengths of youth and families. Either through parent or youth coaching, groups or counseling, kids are hearing that they are strong and kind. When those behaviors get noticed and rewarded, then kids become even stronger and more kind. They start seeing themselves as strong. They will act and behave in a way that supports that belief.

Did you know...?
Attempting to reduce crime by focusing only on law enforcement and corrections, is like providing expensive ambulances at the bottom of a cliff to pick up the youngsters who fall off -- rather than building a fence at the top to keep them from falling in the first place.
Funded by the Colorado Department of Human Services - Division of Youth Corrections, Senate Bill 94 is a statewide grant initiative that provides alternatives to detention for youth involved in the juvenile justice system. This collaborative effort is changing kids' lives every day. Click here to read examples of how SB94 is helping kids in the Roaring Fork Valley. We think you'll agree that it's having a positive impact! |

What would the season of giving be without the season of thanks?
We are pleased to take the opportunity in this month's e-newsletter to thank our many friends and donors who make what we do possible. Below you will read about some of the funding we've received, the business partnerships that make sure we stay on solid footing, and the progamming that makes it all worthwhile.
Thanks for reading! |

Business Partners
Tri-Glenwood Triathlon Director Cindy Lundin (center), with YZ's Robin Tolan and Patty Schaffner, presents a check for $6000.
We all know in order to really make a difference it's essential to engage the community. We are so grateful to local businesses who have committed their organizations to making a difference in the lives of kids. Every day at YouthZone we are reminded of the many ways they change lives. We see it on the relieved faces of moms and dads. We read it in the letters of thanks from grateful teens. We hear it in the excited voices of parents who've just had that "ah-ha" moment.
And those moments are why we do what we do. Helping communities raise great kids. In this season of thanks, YouthZone is extremely grateful to the many businesses who offer their support every day: Alpine Bank, American National Bank, Berthod Motors, Glenwood Post Independent, Encana Oil and Gas, Hot Springs Lodge & Pool, Gould Construction, US Bank and Williams Production.
Thank you for your support, and Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at YouthZone!

A New Kind of Criminal Justice
Restorative Justice is a key component to our work at YouthZone. So we were especially pleased by a recent article in Parade Magazine, highlighting the RJ Facilitator from Longmont, CO, who recently trained our own staff!
"From Fresno, Calif., to Hempstead, N.Y., hundreds of communities in the country are using restorative justice to deal with criminals. Offenders must take responsibility for their actions and try to repair the harm they've done by apologizing, returning stolen money, or doing community service, for example. 'People find a way to right the wrong, and that's the beauty of it,' says Beverly Title, who runs a program in Longmont, Colo. Restorative justice can work in lieu of the criminal-justice system or in partnership with it." Read on... |

Spotlight on the Community
Each month we want to let you know about some wonderful organizations doing great work for kids... This month we want to introduce you to Best Year Yet! Not only is the Best Year Yet organization an internationally growing company but it offers personal insights and coaching services that can transform your ability to produce results in one year or less. YouthZone has had a long-standing relationship with BYY Founder, Jenny Ditzler, and we are pleased to be utilizing the BYY principles in our own annual plan this year. Our staff and board recently implemented personal and organizational goals at the YZ strategic plan session. We can't wait to get started! Best of all, BYY has a new, easy to use online application. |
