OKACAA Annual Conference Sept. 16-18
The Annual Conference of the Oklahoma Association of Community Action Agencies will be Sept. 16-18 at the Marriott Hotel which is located at 3233 Northwest Expressway in Oklahoma City.
 
Northeast Has Big Plans for Stimulus Funds
Northeast Oklahoma Community Action Agency is expanding its weatherization program with funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Exective Director Jean Cooper also hopes launch  other efforts focusing on health, economic development, and financial empowerment.
 
A Healing Heart
Central Oklahoma Community Action Agency Family Support Specialist Brenda Mutai-Hall has seen a dramatic increase in the number of Stillwater residents requesting help with food, rent or utilities.
 
Congress Hears About Bridges Out of Poverty Program
 
Members of Congress learned about Cookson Hills Community Action Foundation's Bridges Out of Poverty from Exective Director Cleon Harrell. He spoke in Washington about how surplus mobile homes are used as lab facilities for a life skills educational program.

KI BOIS Community Action Foundation Human Resources Director Doylene Knowlton and Fiscal Officer Jan Garner have earned the Certified Community Action Professional designation awarded by the Community Action Partnership.
 
 
Little Dixie Community Action Agency will be able to recruit 27 more young adults who will work toward their GED while learning job skills and serving their community by building affordable housing with a $675,000 YouthBuild grant. Thirty young adults have already participated in the program which began at Little Dixie in 2008. 
 
  
  
The Oklahoma City Educare center is highlighted in Gov. Brad Henry's "Our Oklahoma" column. The Community Action Agency of Oklahoma City and Oklahoma-Canadian Counties is one of the partners in the project.
 
 
About $200 was raised by the Child Support Enforcement program at Great Plains Improvement Foundation to purchase school supplies for youngsters at the J. Roy Dunning Children's Shelter.
 
 
Federal rules, effective April 1, 2010, will require Community Action Agencies weatherizing homes built prior to 1978 to have a Certified Renovator onsite. Weatherizing may disturb lead-based paint found in these older homes. Twelve staff members of Oklahoma Community Action Agencies have already been certified.
