PLATEAU LAND AND WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT
Wildlife Management Activity Highlight:
Remote Camera Mammal Survey

Are you are concerned about excessive predator numbers on your property? Fascinated by secretive nocturnal creatures? Or just looking to fulfill another wildlife management activity before the end of the year? Conducting a Remote Camera Mammal Survey is a great way to accomplish all of these goals.

Mammals Play a Critical Role in the Health of our Ecosystem

Texas has a wide variety of mammal species occupying its vast wild lands and their survival rates can have significant ripple effects up and down the food chain. Out-of-control predator populations, such as coyotes, have significant impacts on ground-nesting birds like Wild Turkey and Northern Bobwhite. Other species such as ringtails and porcupine are less common and seldom seen, providing an exciting experience when one is observed.

How do Remote Camera Mammal Surveys Fit Into my Wildlife Management Plan?:

Texas Wildlife Tax Valuation law allows landowners to qualify in the Census category by inventorying and monitoring wildlife populations. By specifically targeting mammals with a Remote Camera Mammal Survey, this activity can be utilized as a tool for a variety of uses in wildlife management efforts, including:

  • Vermin and predator population control e
  • Identifying problem species - determine what is damaging your feeders or how many feral hogs are rooting around
  • Inventorying wildlife diversity
  • General interest in the animal life occupying your land

What is Plateau's Role?

Trained Plateau field biologists will determine a suitable location for the survey stations and set up infrared, motion-triggered cameras placed at scent-baited stations. Following a 14-day survey period, we will return and collect the cameras for photo analysis. A detailed report narrating the results of the survey will then be prepared, describing the animals observed, analyzing the diversity and density of the species, and offering recommendations to fit your management goals. We will also provide you with a CD containing all of the quality photos for your enjoyment. The activity, along with the survey report, can be included in your Annual Report each year, which we can also prepare for you.

You never know what you might find lurking through the night on your land!
