A Message From Our Head of School

Dear Parents,

The best part of my position is having the opportunity to greet and meet students and parents, especially those that I see almost every morning as they enter the Lower School. It's a great way for me to start my day and it's what I have been doing for years. Before going over to the Lower School, I spend time in the dining room, meeting with the boarding students and talking with faculty. I pride myself in getting to know the names of students. This year, with so many new students, it has been a challenge. Hopefully I'll get there soon.

As you know, Parent Conferences were held this week and will take place again next week for Lower School from 3:30-7:00 p.m. on Thursday. I would like to thank the Parents Association for providing dinner for the faculty during these conferences, especially Christie Gound who put together the great menu. If you attended your child's conferences this week, I hope they went well and that you were well informed on everything happening in the classroom or subject areas. Never hesitate to contact a faculty member, at any time, if you have a question regarding your child's education. Don't wait until the midterm or end of term if you have a concern.

Next Friday, October 12th, school is not in session and offices will be closed in observance of Columbus Day. It has been a very busy year for everyone and I believe the long weekend is needed.

Speaking of special calendar dates, our first and only Saturday Open House takes place on Saturday, October 20th from 9:00-11:00 a.m. If you know of a family, friend, or neighbor interested in AOA, please share the date and time with them. You are the best promoters of the school. There are other Open House dates scheduled throughout the year, but this is the only one that takes place on a weekend.

Have a great weekend and week ahead.

Chuck Roman

School Calendar, Events, and Sports Schedules

Just a reminder of three resources available on the AOA website (www.andrewsosborne.org):

1. The monthly school calendar can be found in two locations - at the top of any AOA website page under "Calendar", or in the left column under "Resources/Forms".  Click on either one of these to access the page where the calendar is located.  The format is the same as the hardcopy version you received at the beginning of the school year, with the website version being updated as needed.  To view the current version, click HERE.

2. The Events page can also be accessed from the top of any AOA website page.  Click on "Events" to access the page.  This is where all registration links are located for various AOA and Parents Association events.

3. Sports Schedules can be found in the left column under "Athletics", and then under their individual sport.  These schedules are also updated as needed.

If you have any questions or comments, please contact Ellen Beers at 440-942-3600 ext. 240 or at ebeers@andrewsosborne.org.

Host Families

At AOA we are fortunate to have a large and diverse international student population. As many of you are aware, our dormitories close during scheduled school breaks (Thanksgiving, Winter, and Spring) and several of our international students look forward to the opportunity of staying with a local family during these times. We hope you will consider participating in our AOA Host Family program.

What are the benefits of being a Host Family?

  • Exposing your family to a new culture and language
  • Practicing hospitality and generosity with your own family
  • Developing a relationship with a teenager that may last for years to come
  • Supporting diversity and cross-cultural understanding in your own home

You may choose one, two or all three breaks. Stipends are included.

Break                    Dates                                              Stipend per student

Thanksgiving         Wed. Nov. 21st - Sun. Nov. 25th       $250
Winter                   Fri. Dec. 21st - Sat. Jan. 5th           $1,000

Spring                    Sat. Mar. 23rd - Sat. Apr. 6th          $1,000

The dormitories close and re-open at 12:00 p.m. noon on the stated dates.

If you are interested in being a host family, please contact the Director of Residential Life, Ben Irie, for an application. Applications are due by Friday, October 19th. Ben can be reached at 440-942-3600 ext. 217 or at birie@andrewsosborne.org.
