A Message From Our Head of School

Dear Parents,

Yesterday, I asked a student in the Upper School how everything was going. He told me that everything was "just OK". I replied "just OK?" He then said "the first couple of days were great until I started getting homework!" I'm sure he's not the only one feeling this way.

Signups for the after school Lower School Sports Program are very good as of today. The fall session for grades 3-5 begins next Tuesday and Thursday, and the program for grades K-2 begins next Wednesday. There is still time to register online before the program gets under way next week. Please see the article below for a link to the registration.

Much has been done this past summer to get ready for the new school year. As you are aware, additional classroom spaces were added to accommodate the enrollment increase. In September's monthly newsletter, these areas and a number of other improvements will be highlighted.

Congratulations to our fall sports teams (cross country, boys soccer, girls tennis, volleyball), as they are off to a great start. Initiated by Vance Linamen, athletic director, we are now in a new private school league known as the Lake Effect Conference. There are eight schools in this conference that will be competing for championships in each sport. All eight schools are non-members of the Ohio High School Athletic Association. Even though these schools cannot compete in state playoffs, they are now afforded the opportunity to compete for sports awards and championships at a regional level.

As a reminder, if you are dropping off your child in front of the Osborne Building, please do this in a way that does not back up traffic. We do have busses that drop off students in this area and they are on a schedule to go to other schools. If the traffic flow continues to cause busses to wait, we will no longer be able to permit the dropping off of students in this area. There is no parking in the circle at dismissal.

It's been a wonderful first full week of school.

Have a great weekend and week ahead.

Chuck Roman

National Honor Society Induction

On Wednesday, September 19th, a new group of members will be inducted into the Andrews Osborne Academy Chapter of the National Honor Society.  NHS is one of the oldest organizations in the United States that recognizes and engages high school students on a selected group of criteria - Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Character and Citizenship. Inductees to this organization must meet stringent requirements in all of these areas to be considered for membership. NHS membership is more than just an award; it is joining a group of like-minded students and faculty which understands that giving back to both our school and the community is a rich and worthwhile endeavor. The administration and faculty of AOA would like to congratulate the following inductees:

Juniors
Amara Davis

Susan Lefelhocz
Michelle Picciano
Xuequian Yu

Seniors
Ran Jin

Hongyu Zhang

Membership consideration for sophomores and juniors during the 2013-2014 academic year will begin in the spring of 2013. Students who wish to apply for membership must meet the following criteria: attend AOA for at least one year, earn at least a 3.5 GPA, and display the characteristics of scholarship, leadership, character, citizenship and service to the school and community.

Girl Scouts

The AOA Daisy, Brownie and Junior Troops have an information and orientation parent meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 18th, from 3:15 - 4:00 p.m. in Mrs. Matchinga's classroom.  The troops are open to girls in Kindergarten through 5th grade.
