AOAPA Updates

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone had an enjoyable spring break. I haven't counted, but there are not many days left until the end of the school year. I am sure most of the students know exactly what that number is! The AOAPA continues to be busy in many areas of the school.

Below are some of the activities we have helped support in the past several months:

  • Provided $2,000 by request of the Prom Committee to support transportation and other items for this years prom
  • Provided $2,000 to the Spirit Week Committee for the purchase of new T-shirts for all students and faculty
  • Provided $1,000 along with $1,000 from the Sports Boosters for the purchase of the new Phoenix Mascot
  • Organized and paid for a cast party for all Middle School students and their families after their production of Music Man Jr.this past March. All students were presented with a cast T-shirt to commemorate the event. Thanks to parent Mimi Pipino, Cailin Jaspers (8th) for organizing all the details. It was a huge success on all accounts.

Thanks to all who submitted nominations for next year's AOAPA board. All nominees were contacted and those listed below have agreed to run:

  • President - Lisa Stewart, Brynne (2nd) and Ian (5th)
  • Vice President of the Lower School - Mandy Capel, Connor (2nd)
  • Vice President of the Middle/Upper School - Susan Culotta, Gabby (6th) and Tori (2nd)
  • Treasurer - Emily Dennis, Aaron (9th)
  • Secretary - Stephanie Maley, Jonathan (2nd) and Patrick (1st)

Since they are running unopposed, we will not be sending out a paper ballot as we have done in the past. They will officially be nominated at the May AOAPA meeting. Per our bylaws, nominations will be taken from the floor at that time and the new Board will be elected by those in attendance. I greatly appreciate each of them agreeing to serve the school in this capacity.

Please note that the last AOAPA meeting of the year has been changed from May 15th to Monday, May 21st. We are going to have a special speaker at that time. See the box below for the details. Hope to see you there.

Enjoy the spring weather!

Respectfully,
Sharon Graper

Save the Date: May 21st Special Lecture

The Parents Association will be hosting a special presentation by Jim Buchan, the director of coaching for the Mentor Youth Soccer Club and MSC Wave.  He has an M.A. in both Sports Administration and Education, as well as extensive experience coaching at all levels, in addition to being an accomplished player himself.

Mr. Buchan will discuss how much of an influence parents have on their child's motivation to play and/or quit extra-curricular activities or sports.  He will also address how parental pressure on student athletes (from the youngest recreational leagues to students in high school sports) is observed in both school and public settings.  In addition he will cover the positives and negatives of youth sports as well as how much is too much, what sports participation teaches children, and are you doing your child a disservice by not involving them at a young age.

A
dditional information will follow. This lecture will be open to the public and childcare will be provided for AOA families.

Free Lecture at University School

Just 27 years old, Cameron Johnson is recognized as one of the country's most successful young entrepreneurs. Starting at the age of nine, he founded more than a dozen successful businesses. The author of You Call the Shots will share his insights on finding success in life by following your gut and doing what you love to do.

Passionate and whip-smart about business, Johnson consults with Fortune 500 companies, and has been featured in The New York Times, on CNN and CNBC, and hundreds of other media outlets. Johnson was earning $15,000 a day by the age of 15. When he left high school, he had a dozen profitable businesses under his belt. Johnson has spoken to hundreds of audiences, on subjects varying from business to social media to the economy. In 2009, he was named one of the Ten Outstanding Young Americans by the United States Junior Chamber (Jaycees).

The evening will include a Youth Entrepreneurship Fair, featuring exhibits by students from a variety of organizations, including Junior Achievement and US's Entrepreneur Institute.

Committee Chairs for 2012-2013

Have you been looking for a way to get more involved? We are putting together the list of chairs for next year's AOAPA committees and there are still a few open spots. We are especially in need of a Middle School parent who would be interested in organizing the Middle School social events (fall mixer and spring cast party) as well as parents to run the Uniform Swap and the Lower School Polar Express event. We are also looking for co-chairs for many events.

This is a great way to get involved. If you are interested, please contact Sharon Graper at sgraper@holdenarb.og for more details on what is involved. The Committee Chair list can be viewed on the AOAPA section of the website.

Student Art Auction

This year, as in the past, pieces of student art will be auctioned off as a fundraiser for the AOAPA. This year the auction will be online. There will be pieces from each class in grades K through 7th.  A special item this year is a picnic table, which under the direction of Lower School teachers Christine Papageorge and Michelle Huck many students will turn into a one of kind masterpiece.

The auction will start on May 17th, in conjunction with the Fine Arts Festival and Grandparents Day. It will close on May 31st, which is Field Day. All pieces will be available for viewing in person at the school as well as online.  Stay tuned for more details.

Rescheduled Mother/Son Event

The Mother/Son event has been rescheduled. Since the snow decided not to cooperate this year, we had to cancel the annual sledding event.

Save the date of Friday, June 8th, for a Night Time Creature Walk at The Holden Arboretum. A member of the Arboretum Conservation Department will be helping us locate bats, owls and other cool creatures of the night. More details to follow.
