A Message From Our Head of School

Dear Parents,

Today was the first day that students and staff of Chardon High School returned to school. It is very hard for me not to be thinking of them today. As a school, we have held moments of silence and wore colors of red and black (the colors of Chardon High School). Our message display sign on Mentor Avenue lets them know that they are in our thoughts and prayers. Joe Bergant, Superintendent of Chardon Schools, is a good friend. Joe and I worked together a number of years ago and still keep in contact. He has been acknowledged for the outstanding leadership he displayed through this time of grief. Joe set a wonderful example for other leaders, including myself, to follow in a time of crisis.

I have offered our support in whatever we can do as a school to assist the faculty, staff, and most importantly the students at Chardon High School and the families of the victims. With this in mind, the school will send a monetary contribution to the "Chardon Healing Fund." The fund has been established to assist those affected by the tragedy. We will be dropping our donation off next Friday, March 9th, at PNC Bank. Faculty and staff have been given the opportunity to add to this amount next week. If you would like to send in a check to add to the school's gift, please make a check out to the "Chardon Healing Fund" and return your check to Kathy Marvar, Lower School Administrative Assistant or Shelley Vandevort, Business Office Assistant in the main office. If you choose to do this on your own, you can drop off your check at any PNC Bank.

A Very Busy Weekend

As you well know, AOA is a busy place. This weekend, however, is busier than usual. On Saturday and Sunday, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., our Equestrian Team will be competing in the IEA Regionals against a number of other teams. Some of the best Upper and Middle School riders from AOA will be competing to move on to Zone 5 Final competition in Wilmington, Ohio and the Nationals in April in Syracuse, N.Y.

R.O.A.D (Respecters of all Diversities) is hosting their annual Down Home Dinner from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. this Saturday prior to the Upper School Night of Theatre which begins at 7:30 p.m. Come and join us for both this Saturday. The dinner will be held in the dining room. The Upper School Night of Theatre also takes place this Friday at 7:30 p.m. During the Middle and Upper School assembly this morning, students performing in the Night of Theatre gave us a preview of what we can expect at the enjoyable evening planned for tonight and tomorrow night. You don't want to miss it.

Have a great weekend and week ahead.

Upper School One Act Plays

The plays being performed this weekend are awesome!  Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday night, with ticket prices of $3.00 for students/seniors and $5.00 for adults.  The productions are appropriate for any age, and really highlight the acting skills of our students.  Here is a brief synopsis of the productions.

This Is A Test - What happens in the mind of a student who has failed to properly prepare for her exam? This short one-act tells it all!

Flowers for Algernon - based on the famous short story and subsequent book, this one-act tells the story of a mentally limited man whose intelligence is surgically improved.

Bull in a China Shop - This is the story of 6 elderly and lonely old women, the handsome policeman who lives across the street and the lengths they go to to attract his attention. (Can we say....murder?) The madcap merriment that ensues will make you smile.Bull in a China Shop - This is the story of 6 elderly and lonely old women, the handsome policeman who lives across the street and the lengths they go to to attract his attention. R.O.A.D. Down Home Dinner

fried chicken
Come to AOA prior to the Saturday play performance and enjoy a delicious dinner beforehand.

The Upper School student club, R.O.A.D. (Respecters of All Diversities), will host their annual Down Home Dinner on Saturday, March 3rd, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m before the Upper School play - One Acts. The cost of admission is $10 for adults and $7 for children 10 and under. Admission is cash only and we ask that you please pay when you arrive in the dining room.

This dinner features many dishes often categorized under the Soul Food heading; homemade macaroni and cheese, fried chicken, catfish, ribs, greens, cornbread, sweet potato pie and much more. Food service begins at 5:00 p.m. and will continue until 7:00 p.m., but attendees should plan to arrive by 6:30 p.m.

This year, we would like to thank the Tompkins family for helping put on the dinner. If other members of the AOA community would like to lend a hand preparing the food, please contact Mr. DiBianca at gdibianca@andrewsosborne.org.  He
can also assist with any questions or other inquiries.

We look forward to sharing this experience with the AOA community. All proceeds from the dinner will go towards future diversity projects sponsored by R.O.A.D., which strives to study and oppose prejudice against people of all diversities and to promote matters of equity and justice both inside and outside our school community.

Winter Sports Awards Night

Winter athletes and their families are cordially invited to attend our Winter Sports Banquet and Awards Night on Wednesday, March 7th. You can pay at the serving line. The athletes and coaches will receive a complimentary dinner.

Following the banquet, we will meet in the Auditorium for a guest speaker and special awards presentations at 7:15 p.m. At 8:00 p.m. we will then break off into four different areas for team presentations:

Dinner with Friends

It's l
ast call to host a dinner for our Dinner with Friends event. If you're interested in acting as a host at your home or elsewhere please contact Sue Leahey at 440-942-3600 ext. 235 by March 6th. Invitations will hit the mail soon, so watch your mailboxes!

Other news from the Development Office:

This weekend, a group of our students will volunteer their time to call our alumni. The phone calls are done for a few reasons: to find out how our alumni are doing, update them on the current happenings of the school, and to ask for their support of the Annual Fund. In advance I would like to issue a great big thank you to our student volunteers for helping in this effort!

If you have not yet made your own Annual Fund pledge, please consider doing so today. Let's get to 100% participation by our parents, staff and faculty!

Athletic Boosters Officers Needed

The AOA Athletic Boosters have been a valuable part of AOA's Athletic Department for the past three years, raising over $15,000.  Their efforts have created a concession service for all of our home sports events, including stocking and staffing.  The boosters' donations are responsible for the new equipment in the weight room, the logos in the field house gym, our new mascot costume (soon to be revealed during Spirit Week) and contributions to support all of our athletic teams.

We thank John Marusic, Nancy Anderson (in memoriam), Carol Waytes and Betsy Hyde for serving  as our Athletic Boosters officers for the past three years. We are now looking for volunteers to serve as Athletic Boosters officers for the next school year.  If you are interested, please contact Vance Linamen, athletic director, at vlinamen@andrewsosborne.org or please feel free to call him at 440-942-3600 ext. 225.

Box Top/Label Contest Winners

Our annual Box Top/Label Contest was a great success!  The winners of a pizza treat are:

Mrs. Marlow's fourth grade class with an amazing 173 box tops/UPCs per student and Mrs. Naso's third grade class with a fabulous 92 box tops/UPCs per student.  Our total count was over 8100 box tops and UPCs!

K
eep saving for next year's contest.  Remember to save the entire UPC code for the Labels for Education and the Box Tops for Education. In the meantime, Labels for Education has a collection sheet worth 100 bonus points.  It can be found at www.labelsforeducation.com.  We are especially looking for UPC's from POP SECRET, GLAD and POST products and from TIME, REAL SIMPLE, and ALL YOU magazines (only ones purchased off the news-stand count). These items are new to Labels for Education. Many don't even use the Labels for Education logo by the UPC code, so it's easy to forget they are part of the program.

You have until May 11th (later than indicated on the form) to submit the collection sheet or just the UPCs. Even partially filled sheets are acceptable - we can fill in as needed. Ask your family and friends to fill out a form for you.  Forms can be dropped off in Kathy Marvar's or Jane Piszczor's office.

As always, thank you for your help!  If you have any questions, please contact Jane Piszczor at jpiszczor@andrewsosborne.org.

Summer Camp Update

AOA will not be hosting a Summer Day Camp this year. After offering the camps two years in a row, we reevaluated the revenue vs. the human and financial resources it took to implement the camps. Unfortunately, the summer camp program did not meet our financial targets. We are planning to regroup for next year and are looking to develop more specialty camps. We know that many Lower School families participated in our program last year and we're hopeful this decision has been made early enough to allow you time to plan your summer programming needs.

We will still be offering a two week science camp and three equestrian boarding camps. The July equestrian camp will offer a day camp opportunity as well. Please see the camp flyers below. Register online at www.andrewsosborne.org.

Should you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call the Marketing and Communications Department at 440-942-3600 ext. 240.
