A Message From Our Head of School

Dear Parents,

This morning, I officiated the annual ceremony of the wedding of the letters Q and U. For the eight years that I have been Head of School of The Phillips Osborne School and Andrews Osborne Academy, this is my 7th year of celebrating this important event with our kindergarten students.

So what's the big deal? If you Google the letters of Q and U, you will find over 62,000,000 results! What kindergarten students have learned for years is that the letter Q never goes anywhere without the letter U. What better way to learn that these two important letters always go together than to celebrate by having a Q and U wedding. This is not a new concept or idea as there is actually a book titled the Wedding of Q and U. Many newspapers across the country have printed articles in their local papers about such events. Usually after the wedding, a reception follows and this morning our wedding was followed by cake, cookies, other refreshments and dancing. It's one of those events that our students, as they get older, never forget.

AOA and SPIRE

I am sure that you now know about our partnership with the SPIRE Institute in Geneva. You recently received a press release announcing the partnership and at Preview Night for Lower School parents, I made a brief presentation. The partnership between the two institutions does not change our mission. Students attending both AOA and SPIRE will still need to meet the criteria to be accepted at AOA. These students will attend classes until the early afternoon and will train at SPIRE in the afternoon and early evening. When not at SPIRE, they will participate in school activities and events as a typical boarding student would. Academics will continue to be the main focus and mission of Andrews Osborne Academy. I also want to emphasize that students training at SPIRE are not all elite athletes, as they will also provide training to any student having the desire to improve their athletic ability in soccer, swimming, track and field, basketball, and volleyball. The fact that we are in partnership with SPIRE will not change our athletic programs at AOA.

Have a great weekend and week ahead.

Chuck Roman

Kindergarten Q & U Wedding

As Mr. Roman mentioned above, the annual Q & U Wedding was held this morning.  The Kindergarteners, faculty, and family members had a fun time celebrating.  More pictures will be shared in the monthly Phoenix News.

Astronomy Club Event

This Monday, Feb. 13th, the AOA observatory will be opened to parents, faculty, staff and students from 6:30-8:30 pm. People will be able to look at the moon and stars through the telescope.  If interested, you can bring your own telescope.  This is a free event.

R.O.A.D. Down Home Dinner

fried chicken
The Upper School student club, R.O.A.D. (Respecters of All Diversities), will host their annual Down Home Dinner on Saturday, March 3rd, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m before the Upper School play - One Acts. The cost of admission is $10 for adults and $7 for children 10 and under. Admission is cash only and we ask that you please pay when you arrive in the dining room.

This dinner features many dishes often categorized under the Soul Food heading; homemade macaroni and cheese, fried chicken, catfish, ribs, greens, cornbread, sweet potato pie and much more. Food service begins at 5:00 p.m. and will continue until 7:00 p.m., but attendees should plan to arrive by 6:30 p.m.

This year, we would like to thank the Tompkins family for helping put on the dinner. If other members of the AOA community would like to lend a hand preparing the food, please contact Mr. DiBianca at gdibianca@andrewsosborne.org.  He
can also assist with any questions or other inquiries.

We look forward to sharing this experience with the AOA community. All proceeds from the dinner will go towards future diversity projects sponsored by R.O.A.D., which strives to study and oppose prejudice against people of all diversities and to promote matters of equity and justice both inside and outside our school community.
