A Message From Our Head of School

Dear Parents,

Today officially ends the first semester or second quarter. Outside it looks like the great weather we've had for the last month is also over. A number of Upper School students asked me why we didn't have a "snow day" today. Yes, it's cold, but the roads were not that bad this morning.  Our skiers have something to cheer about as this will be their first weekend of skiing, as well as having the long weekend to enjoy.

If you are looking for something to do this weekend, come out and support our Middle School boys and girls basketball teams as they will be competing in their annual Basketball Tournament. Our girls team plays today at 3:45 p.m., followed by our boys team at 5:30 p.m. Tomorrow's games begin at 10:00 a.m. Admission for the tournament is $4.00 for adults, $2.00 for students and seniors.

If you did not have the chance to make a donation to the annual fund to receive a tax write off for the 2011 calendar year, you are not too late to make a gift before the close of the Annual Fund Campaign on June 30, 2012. As a reminder, the annual fund helps to close the gap between tuition and the actual cost to educate each student. All gifts, large or small, benefit the school and our students.  Our goal is to have 100% participation by all families. We have a way to go to reach this goal and need your support. If this is your first year of being associated with Andrews Osborne Academy, annual fund campaigns are held by all independent schools. Thank you to those families who have already supported the Annual Fund Campaign.

Have a great long weekend and week ahead.

Chuck Roman

ERB Testing for Grades 3,5,7

We will have ERB testing for grades 3, 5, and 7 each morning January 17 - 20 (Tuesday - Friday).

Our students take the CTP4 test (from the Educational Records Bureau), which is targeted specifically at high performing suburban schools and independent schools. This test provides the school with feedback on the overall program and gives parents a glimpse of their child's academic performance on specific skills.

Further information for grades 3 & 5 will be sent home.  For a 7th grade schedule, please click HERE.

Many factors can affect a student's performance, including test anxiety, fatigue, hunger, and motivation. We ask that students get adequate rest the night before the tests. This is not a test that students can study for and they should be able to continue with after school activities as long as they are able to get to bed at a reasonable hour.  Homework for the week will be adjusted in consideration of testing.  Testing will begin in the morning so we are asking for students to be on time for school and to not schedule outside appointments.  The tests are 45 to 90 minutes in duration.

Elective Math Course

The Math Department is offering a new elective course this second semester called "Topics". The intent of the course is to expose students to mathematical applications that they might otherwise never experience in a traditional mathematics sequence in high school.

Topics to be studied include:

  • Management Science: urban services, business efficiency, planning and scheduling, and linear programming
  • Voting and Social Choice: the manipulability of voting systems, weighted voting systems, and electing the President
  • Fairness and Game Theory: fair division, apportionment, and the mathematics of competition
  • Your Money and Resources: savings models, borrowing models, and the economics of resources

There will be an online component to the course and guest speakers occasionally, including a bank officer. The course will also include a short unit on income tax and tax preparation. Students will do group work as well as individual research.  The final exam will be a research paper rather than a traditional exam.

Please contact Kathy Cherney at ext. 314 or at kcherney@andrewsosborne.org with any questions.

Senior Projects

The AOA Upper School is looking for some help with Senior Projects.  The Senior Project program gives seniors the opportunity to experience a career or specialized field outside the walls of the classroom.

The program takes place between May 7 to 25, 2012.  Students are encouraged to find projects that reflect their academic or career interests.  Past projects have included a wide range of professions, including business, architecture, engineering, law, the health field, animal care and community service.

To aid in helping students find suitable projects, we are asking members of the AOA community if they would be interested in hosting a student or helping to find projects for seniors.  If you would like to learn more details about the program please visit http://libguides.andrewsosborne.com/seniors or c
ontact Mr. Doringo (Upper School teacher) at extension 309.
