A Message From Our Head of School

Dear Parents,

In case you have not looked at your school calendar, school is not in session next Monday, October 10, which is also Columbus Day. October 10 is also Thanksgiving Day in Canada. Most of you know Rachelle Sundberg, our Director of Admissions. She is Canadian and probably thought we were taking the day off for her!

As you are aware, the Parents' Association has planned a great evening (Phoenix Fall Mixer) next Friday, October 14 at LaMalfa Party Center in Mentor. It's not too late to sign up. It's a 50's event, so if you're up to it, come dressed for the occasion.

Next Friday is our annual Powder Puff game, where the senior girls play the junior girls in flag football. As a fundraising effort to benefit the United Way, students next week can donate $1.00 per chance to throw a pie at an esteemed faculty or staff member. At the game's halftime, the five faculty or staff members who have the most chances purchased in their name will have the pies thrown at them. We did this last year for another event and it was a huge success. As a result, we decided to do it again to raise funds for the United Way. You are welcome to watch the Powder Puff game and see the halftime festivities. The game begins at 2:15 p.m. on the soccer field.

Saturday, October 15, is our Open House from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m.  If you know a neighbor or friend who may be interested in Andrews Osborne Academy, please make them aware of next Saturday and ask them to contact the Office of Admission. Our next Open House is scheduled for Tuesday, November 8, which is also Election Day. Most public schools are closed on Election Day. This Open House will be from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. for grades EC-5, and 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. for grades 6-12.

We hope that your conferences went well with faculty this week. A second day of conferences for Lower School parents will take place next Thursday, from 3:30-7:00 p.m.

Have a great extended weekend and week ahead.

Chuck Roman

Australian Exchange Program for Upper School Students

AOA students in grades 10-12 have the opportunity to participate in an exchange program with Central Coast Grammar School, an independent, co-educational, non-denominational school for kindergarten through grade 12. Located in Erina Heights, Australia, near Sydney, CCGS offer its Student Exchange program in New Zealand, Canada, England, Wales, Ireland, Germany, Japan and the USA.

This is a reciprocal exchange, which means that an AOA student would go to Australia to live with a CCGS family during June and July. The student from the CCGS Australian family would then come to Ohio to live with the AOA student's family during October and November. There is no cost to participate in the program itself-just the airfare. Visiting families are responsible for the airfare to and from Australia and for spending money.

Five AOA students participated in 2010. They left for Australia right after school ended in June and returned to Ohio the first week in August. In addition to attending school, they also enjoyed a vacation break with their host families.  All of the students commented that it was an amazing experience for them to spend two months living in Australia. They also developed friendships that will last a lifetime.

This is a wonderful opportunity for a student to experience daily life in another part of the world. If your family is interested in participating in this exchange, please contact the Associate Director of Admission, Donna Miller, for more information. She can be reached by email at dmiller@andrewsosborne.org or at 440-942-3600, ext. 238. The deadline is November 1.  We hope that at least two AOA families will take advantage of this opportunity.

Lower School Polar Express

Join Us For A Ride on the Polar Express!

AOA families have exclusive access to a chartered train car for The Polar Express, Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad's version of the wonderful story. Elves run the trains, children (and parents too!) can wear their pajamas and read the story, drink hot chocolate, sing Christmas Carols, and visit the "North Pole" where Santa boards the train and gives each child a silver bell.

This is a ride on a 1-level passenger train car which seats 80 people. Tickets for the CVSR Polar Express train is typically done by lottery. This is a rare opportunity and we have a car just for AOA families.

A maximum of 80 tickets will be sold on a first come first serve basis, with a maximum of 6 tickets can be purchased by any one individual.  Tickets are only $37 per person, adults and kids.  Children 1 and under ride free.

The train boards at Independence at 6:30 p.m. and ends around 9 p.m.  Tickets will be sent home in your child's bookbags several weeks before the train ride.

To register, go to www.andrewsosborne.org and look on the home page, or click HERE.
