A Message From Our Head of School

Dear Parents,

Autumn is officially upon us and the leaves are beginning to fall. That's why I don't like to begin school in August, since summer is not officially over until September 22. Go ahead and make your plans for next August, especially if you're planning vacation, since our first day of school will take place after Labor Day.

With morning assembly for Middle and Upper school students not beginning until 9:40 a.m., I now have the opportunity to greet Lower School students and parents more often than I have had in the past. What a great way for me to begin my day. Yes, I do plan to be out there when it's cold, but not when it's pouring. To see students arriving with smiles on their faces and eager to enter the building makes what I do all worthwhile.

This morning, the Equestrian Center was featured on WKYC's Good Company. An "A" rated horse show is taking place this weekend, featuring some of our equestrian students, as well as over 120 riders from a five state region and Good Company was interested in our center. If you are interested in learning more about what happens at the equestrian center, visit this weekend. There is no admission charge and you will see some of the best riders in the region. Along with featuring the Equestrian Center, we also had the opportunity to promote our program from EC through 12th grade.

Next week, two students will arrive from Australia. They are part of an exchange program we have with a school in Australia. On Monday, we will announce their arrival and also offer an opportunity for our students to visit Australia next summer. We are very fortunate to be able to expose all of our students to cultures from 18 different countries around the world. In today's newsletter, Ben Irie, Director of Residential Life, is asking our local families to host international students during our breaks. Please take this under consideration, as this has been a rewarding experience for families who have done so in the past.

Have a great weekend and week ahead.

Chuck Roman

Athletic Boosters Fall Flower Sale

The annual Fall Flower Sale is now in full swing!  Forms were sent home in grades EC-8.  Please return completed forms to Jane Piszczor in the Student Affairs office in the Lee Building by Wednesday, September 28th.

You can also go online to order at www.flowerpowerfundraising.com; click on "place order" in the upper right hand corner, then type "Andrews Osborne Academy" under "group name".  The online version is a great way to encourage orders from relatives who don't live nearby.

Beautify your yard while you help our athletes; we keep 50% of all sales!  In addition, if our total order is $500 or more, we will earn $100 in flowers for the AOA campus.

Please click HERE for more information.  If you have additional questions, please contact Jane Piszczor at jpiszczor@andrewsosborne.org or at 440-942-3600 ext. 117.

College Visits at AOA

Catherine Sylstra, our College Counselor, schedules numerous college visits for the benefit of our juniors and seniors.

During these college visits, our students have an opportunity to speak face to face with a representative from colleges and universities from across the country.  This is a valuable resource for our juniors to start their research on post secondary schools they may want to apply to, and for our seniors as they are starting this application process.

All visits are held in the College Counselor's office, located in the library in the Lee Building. Juniors and seniors who wish to attend these visits during class time must have a signed advance absence form.

The following colleges and universities will be visiting AOA next week:

Upper School Spring Break Trip 2012

Over the 2012 Spring Break, Upper School students will have the chance to visit 4 European countries in 12 days. We will travel to Italy and explore Venice, Florence, Siena and Pisa; Southern France to visit Nice, Eze, and the small country of Monaco; continuing on to Paris; and ending the trip in London, England. Our European tour will begin on Friday, March 30 and end on Tuesday April 10, 2012.

Until September 30, 2011 the price of the trip is $2865 - an incredible price for a 12 day trip to Europe. After this date, the trip cost will be raised monthly.  If a student has traveled on other AOA Spring Break trips another $95 will be subtracted from the price because they have already paid the lifetime Explorica membership fee (you must use your original username; if you do not have it, please call Explorica).

For more information email Gary DiBianca at gdibianca@andrewsosborne.org or visit www.explorica.com (Tour Code: DiBianca-7965).

CCIS Financial Aid Workshop

CCIS (Cleveland Council of Independent Schools) is offering its annual financial aid workshop on Tuesday, October 5th, from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m.

Host Families

It is hard to believe that we are entering fall, and that we are fast approaching the time to plan for Thanksgiving, Winter, and Spring Breaks.

Here at AOA, we are fortunate to have a large and diverse international student population. As many of you are aware, our dormitory houses close during the scheduled breaks, and several of our students look forward to the opportunity of staying with a local family during these times.  We hope you will consider participating in our AOA Host Family program.

What are the benefits of being a Host Family?

  • Exposing your family to a new culture and language
  • Practicing hospitality and generosity with your own family
  • Developing a relationship with an international teenager that may last for years to come
  • Supporting diversity and cross-cultural understanding in your own home

You may choose one, two or all three breaks. Stipends are included.

Break                  Dates                                        Amount of Stipend per student

Thanksgiving        Wed. Nov. 23 - Sun. Nov.27                       $250

Winter Break        Sat. Dec. 17 - Mon. Jan. 2                       $1,000

Spring Break         Sat. Mar. 24 - Sun. Apr. 8                       $1,000

PLEASE NOTE: the dorms close and re-open at 12:00 p.m. on the start and end dates listed above.

If you are interested in being a host family, please contact Ben Irie, Director of Residential Life, for an application.  Applications are due by Friday, October 21st.  Ben can be reached at 440-942-3600 ext. 217 or at birie@andrewsosborne.org.
