A Message From Our Head of School

Dear Parents,

This past Wednesday, twenty
four AOA juniors and seniors were inducted into the National Honor Society. Students are selected to this honorary group on the basis of scholarship, leadership, citizenship and service. Students must have a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA, completed the minimum community service hours required at AOA, and have at least 4 semesters during their upper school years of perfect attendance. Congratulations to our senior inductees: Marina Barboza, Abe Yang, Lilliana Chalfant, Soo Jung, Lianna Davis, Lucy Du, Isabel Guan, YiYi Huang, Trista Tong, Winson Zeng, Sophie Wu, and Julia Ludwig. Congratulations to our junior inductees: Xavier Martinez, Joe Zhang, Acoma Gaither, Susan Kang, Jordan Jones, Alexandra Vito, Emily Zart, Philip Zhu, Anna Javins, Samantha Sirl, Astrid Zhou, and Amy Shen.

For the past 45 years, a special group of people known as the Friends of the Library have provided valuable support to the Andrews and now AOA libraries. Forty-five years ago this group began raising funds through bake sales to provide books and other services to the libraries. Today, we celebrated the 45th anniversary of the founding of what is now known as the Friends of the AOA Libraries with a special assembly, as well as having a bake sale where all cookies were sold for a nickel. This was the price cookies sold for during the first bake sale 45 years ago. Thank you, Friends of the AOA Libraries, for the many gifts totaling close to $200,000 that you have provided to our libraries and students.

Last week, I discussed the construction taking place on Kirtland Road. If you are using the Kirtland Road entrance to drop off your child, please consider an alternate route and enter the school off of Mentor Avenue. If you do use the Kirtland Road entrance, please do not drop off your child in an area where they have to walk through the maintenance area. They should be dropped off in front of the Lower or Middle School entrances.

Thank you for attending Parents Night In The Classroom. Should you have any questions which were not answered during the classroom presentations, please do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher(s) or Mrs. Frisbie (Lower School Director) or Mrs. Walsh (Middle/Upper School Director). In addition, you will have an opportunity to meet with your child's teacher(s) during parent conferences, which take place in early October, to discuss classroom performance.

We have a number of new families who are now members of the AOA community. Parents who have been a part of AOA for a number of years and our new parents will have the opportunity to get together for an enjoyable evening the Parent's Association has planned on Friday, October 14. You will be receiving an invitation soon for the Phoenix Fall Mixer. Please mark your calendar and plan to attend.

Have a great weekend and week ahead.

Chuck Roman
