A Message From Our Head of School

Dear Parents,

This morning a short, but very important assembly was held for the Middle and Upper School.  We took time to remember the events of September 11, 2001, ten years later.  The program included a video presentation and a song sung by the choir.  Members of the Willoughby Fire Department joined us for the assembly.  We provided breakfast for them and presented them with a plaque to acknowledge their service to the City of Willoughby and surrounding communities as well as our country.

Next Thursday, September 15, is "Parent Night in the Classroom."  We hope that you plan on attending this important evening.  The evening begins at 7:00 p.m. in the Osborne Building Auditorium where I would like to share with you the program format for the evening.  Refreshments will be provided.  I look forward to seeing everyone next week.

As a number of you are aware, sewer construction is taking place on Kirtland Road.  I was told this afternoon that they hope to have the construction completed within the next 3-4 weeks.  I know that some of you have been frustrated with cars cutting through AOA property, cars which are not dropping off students.  We have contacted the Willoughby Police Department and they will, when feasible, make a presence to stop vehicles that should not be cutting through.  Knowing that this problem will exist for a while, please try to leave earlier in the morning or consider using the Mentor Avenue entrance as we know that some students have been late to class.

GO BROWNS! (I also know that there are some Steeler fans out there.)

Have a great weekend and week ahead.

Chuck Roman

Friends of the AOA Libraries Bake Sale

Forty five years ago, a group of Andrews faculty, alumnae and staff gathered in the library of the Margaret St. John building to address a difficult problem: expenses at the library were greater than the available funds in the Librarian's budget.  Through the years it was bake sales that helped to raise the money to handle the shortfall.

To help celebrate the Friends of the AOA Libraries 45th anniversary and in conjunction with their speakers event next week, we will be hosting a bake sale.

The sale will be held on September 16 during the lunch periods.  To truly honor this anniversary, all baked goods will be offered for a nickel, the same price they were offered for 45 years ago.

Lower School Speech Screenings

Speech screenings will be conducted in the Lower School for grades K - 3 beginning Tuesday, September 13.

All new students in grades 4 & 5 will also be screened.  If a student is found to need further speech evaluation, Mrs. Durst, AOA's Speech Pathologist, will notify parents.

Recycling

Please recycle your newspapers and other papers in the green and yellow bin located in the Field House parking lot (the lot for the outside main gym entrance).

We've recycled 11 tons of paper so far in 2011 with your help.  That's 32 yds. of landfill space saved and 44,000 KWH of energy saved.

Put in the recycling bin:

  • newspapers
  • envelopes and folders
  • magazines
  • office, school, fax, and copy papers
  • shredded paper (in a plastic bag to keep it from blowing)
  • shopping catalogs and telephone books
  • colored paper
  • mail

Please DO NOT put in the bin:

  • plastic
  • glass
  • metals
  • trash

Secured Section on the AOA Website

Recent AOA website enhancements include a secured section that is not available to the general public.  Information about all of the enhancements and how to access the secured section will be communicated in various ways next week (letter, email, and at Parent Night).

Please contact Ellen Beers with any website questions at ebeers@andrewsosborne.org or at 440-942-3600 ext. 240.
