Community Foundation of Greater Grande Prairie

Greetings!

"Inspire Invest Forever - All for Community" is a philosophy very close to the heart of everyone who volunteers or works on behalf of the Community Foundation of Greater Grande Prairie.  It guides our daily actions and reminds us that everything we do is for our communities.  We have even developed a visual reminder for ourselves and others to support our efforts and reinforce our commitment.

The image reminds us that we seek to inspire others to invest in their community, with the intention of strengthening the Peace Country and making it the kind of place where their children and children's children will want to live and call home, forever.  Simply by reading this issue of "Community Landscape," you will be among the first to see it.  You will find a copy beneath my signature.  We plan on using it on all our material over the coming 12 months, so you will be seeing it a lot.

We recently completed our yearly audit process which went very well.  Going hand-in-hand with this is our 2011 Annual Report which will be available following our Board of Director's Annual General Meeting on April 18, 2012.  You can read or download your copy from our website.  On the other hand, if you would prefer to read your copy in a paper format, please let us know.  Keep an eye on our website or follow us on Facebook so you can get your copy.

Preparations for Community Foundation month are well underway and we are also hard at work planning our annual gala.  Check out the stories in this issue of "Community Landscape" to find out what we are doing.

How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.

2012 Annual Gala

Planning efforts are already underway for the Community Foundation's highly anticipated annual gala which has selected "Hotel California" as its theme.  The Foundation is celebrating the 10th year of this wonderful event.

"We're already months ahead in our planning," said Tracey Vavrek, Executive Director of the Community Foundation.  "We've had some really talented people volunteer their expertise which can only better an already wonderful event."

This year's team has grown by well over a half-dozen members, some choosing to join based on their experience from previous years.

"Last year was the first time I ever attended the gala and it was breathtaking," said Lorrie Quinn who volunteers as chair of the Sponsorship subcommittee.  "It was totally unexpected - I felt totally pampered and catered to."

As in previous years, the evening features a five-course meal complete with wine pairings.  For those unfamiliar with this term, it means the wine chosen for each course is accompanied by dishes carefully selected and prepared in a manner designed to bring out the best flavours of both the food and wine.

In keeping with the theme, this year's focus is on the wines of California.

"Although we want our guests to have a good time, we also want them to stay safe," said Tracey.  "We have made arrangements to have all our guests driven to and from the venue which is being held in the Tec Centre at Evergreen Park.  Of course, there is no cost for this service."

Following dinner is a live auction that features a number of interesting and appealing packages including the most sought-after package called the "Power of Philanthropy."    A silent auction will be held throughout the entire evening.

All funds raised from this event goes towards the ongoing operations of the Community Foundation.

"This event is our major source of operating funds," said Tracey.  "Aside from a very small administrative fee (2%) all other funds received by this office go directly towards building on our endowment base which is invested and the proceeds are used to support the charitable community throughout the Peace Country."

The Hotel California Gala is scheduled to for September 15, 2012.  Anyone interested in attending, becoming a sponsor or requiring additional information can contact visit the community foundation website at:

 West County Community Fund

The West County Community Fund was established in June 2011 bringing the number of Regional Funds administered by the Community Foundation to five.

Roger Arcand serves as a director on the Board for the Community Foundation of Greater Grande Prairie and is the Chair of the West County Community Fund.  He invited Tracey Vavrek, Executive Director for the Foundation to deliver a presentation to the community and explain the benefits associated with Community Funds.

Funds of this type provide residents with opportunities to invest in their local area, forever.  Similar to other endowment funds, gifts of all sizes are pooled together until the fund reaches a size that it can start generating interest income.  That income is used to make community grants in support of local charitable activities.

"Tracey's information was very well-received and I had a number of people approach me with their support for the idea," said Roger.  "From there we were able to recruit local residents to sit on an advisory committee; we developed the name, and outlined the area the fund would serve."

All Community Funds are led by a Fund Advisory Committee, which is composed entirely of people who either live in the local area or who have a meaningful connection to it.  These dedicated individuals ensure that the fund supports their community's current priorities along with its emerging needs and future opportunities.

It was the idea of 'forever' that Jim Drabble found most appealing.  Having retired after living and working in the area for over 35 years, he was searching for a way to give back to his adopted community.  When invited to join the fund's advisory committee, Jim was happy to accept.

"I liked the idea of protecting the principal and only using the earned investment to support projects," he said.  "To set up something that would be a legacy was an excellent idea."

Leona Hanson, Mayor of Beaverlodge, had met with Tracey previously.

"As a town council we saw the value of it and decided we would like to be involved in terms of sharing information with the advisory committee and promoting it in the local area," she said.

Roger indicated that the Advisory Council will be focussing on raising awareness of the Community Fund among area residents and creating an understanding of how it can be used benefit the people living in the West County.
