Community As Your Beneficiary - Gift of Life Insurance
Life insurance is a popular and practical way you can make a significant gift to charity. Make the Community Foundation the owner and irrevocable beneficiary of your life insurance policy - you can either give a paid up policy or continue to pay the premiums.
Gift Examples:
- any whole life policy
- many term policies
- many group insurance policies
Benefits to the Donor:
- donation receipt for cash surrender value and any future premiums paid on policies where the ownership is transferred to the charity
If policy ownership rights retained by the donor during lifetime and charity named as beneficiary:
- donation receipt to estate for full value of death proceeds
- satisfaction of providing a future gift while retaining full control of the policy

A Legacy of Giving - Bequest By Will
Willpower is what you create when you prepare a thoughtful will: the power to give the gift of a lifetime, as you see fit.
When including the Community Foundation in your will you are using willpower to help strenghten community programs and purposes you believe in for generations to come.
Gift Examples:
- gifts funded with cash or cash equivalents
- publicly listed securities
- proceeds from RRSP's or RRIF's
- gifts of real estate
- gifts of other tangible property
Benefits to the Donor:
- revocable during your lifetime by changing your will
- donation receipt for use in final income tax return against 100% of taxable income
- satisfaction of providing a future gift while retaining full control of property

Community Investment - Gifts of Appreciated Stock
Everyone wins when you make a gift of appreciated stock to your community. Your gains are put to good use and your gift of stock is reinvested in your community; and qualifies for immediate tax credit.
The transaction is generally a simple electronic transfer of shares undertaken by your Professional Advisor but can include gifts of paper shares.
Gift Examples:
- publicly listed shares
- shares of a Canadian public mutual fund corporation
- units of widely held Canadian mutual fund trusts
Benefits to the Donor
- donation receipt for fair market value of security, generally determined as the closing price on the day the gift if received by the charity
- favorable reductions in capital gains tax
- gifts can be given during donor's lifetime or after, through their estate
