SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT!

Today, I returned home after being stationed in Iraq for 9 months.
While I was still in uniform, I went into an ice cream shop near the airport to get a milkshake.

The girl behind the counter handed me my shake and said, "It's on me." "Thanks, you didn't have to do that," I said. "Neither did you," she replied.

The earth is known as the Blue Planet for a reason, it's no surprise that water is a dominant part of our everyday lives.  The world's current challenge is to improve the planet's water quality and then maintain clean and healthy water that supports all life forms in our diverse environment.

CAPTURING AND REUSING MAKES DOLLARS AND "SENSE"

Understanding Your Pond Is Key To Solving Water Quality Issues...

There are three water conditions that you should look for as a sign that something is not right with your water feature...Green Water, Muddy Water, and Tea-Colored Water.

THE GREEN MONSTER....

The first thing to look at is water clarity...  The water in the pond should not look like a swimming pool.  The pond is a living body of water that should have Aquatic Life.  If the water is completely sterile, fish and aquatic life will not be able to survive in it.  The water in most ponds probably has a greenish hue.  This occurs because of planktonic algae, which is a term that describes algae that is suspended in the water, which is generally caused by an abundance of food, a lot of sunlight, and lack of zooplankton and bacteria.

Zooplankton...just like referring to a zoo, zoo = animals, so a simplified meaning for zooplankton would be animas suspended within the water column.  Backyard are filled with an amazing array of life, and if they get out of whack, one can dominate over the other.  Once a pond gets established, this make take several years, the zooplankton will soon begin to feast over the algae...

BACTERIA...

We're talking good bacteria...If adding a natural bacteria to your pond, it breaks down organic compounds into more simple compounds and helps digest the harmful compounds into inorganic solids, such as salts and solids, carbon dioxide, and water.  This is why it is important to allow an external filter to establish the colony of bacteria, instead of cleaning it on a regular basis.

To discuss options for your existing water feature, schedule a time for us to visit it and we can go over existing problems and look for alternatives...

Algae - The Newest Energy Source
Each year, we have a few problems where algae overtakes many water features, especially the string algae, also know as "The Headache"...  Over the years, the pond industry has fought to find products in getting rid of this nuisance...  Today there are many products on the market that actually, will provide a pond with no string algae at all.
Now at the time we are trying to get rid of it, dozens of companies, especially in Europe, as well as many academic laboratories here in the U.S. are pursuing the possible use of algae as a source of green energy.  Algae are attracting attention because the strains can potentially produce ten or more times more fuel per acre than the corn used to make ethanol  or the soybeans used to make bio diesel.  Also, algae can be grown on arid land and brackish water, so that fuel production would not compete with food production.  And algae are voracious consumers of carbon dioxide, potentially helping to keep some of this greenhouse gas from contributing to global warming.
With so many different options from which to choose, there may come a time when gasoline and diesel-powered lawn mowers will become as extinct as the dinosaurs whose remains are being used for the fuel to power them.
Imagine having a water garden in the future and being able to let the algae thrive...maybe we could sell algae to these companies...just a thought...
