Preparing your Water Feature for the colder months ahead.
As the weather turns colder, there are severals tasks we at Carolina Pondscapes suggest.  Below is a list that we have compiled so that your water feature will be in good shape for the Autumn and Winter months.
  • Netting your pond will prevent a majority of leaves and floating debris from sinking to the bottom of the pond.
  • Top off your water garden with fresh water.  It is always a good practice to add dechlorinator to the water when filling the pond.  This will keep the chlorine from harming the fish.
  • Add Autumn/Winter enzyme prep... which are beneficial bacterial strains that work in cold water below 55°F. This will help to decompose the organic matter in your water garden during the fall and part of the winter. If frozen, it becomes active when thawed, so there's no need to worry about adding it if the water is very cold.
  • Trim back all dead plant s and grasses.  Water plants should be trimmed back approximately 2-inches above the water level.  This will ensure the plants do not rot during the winter.
  • Trim lilies down to the root ball and submerge completely in water for the winter. Make sure the water is at least 12 inches deep.
  • Discard all floating plants like water hyacinths and lettuce. Throw away annuals as well. If your water garden isn't very deep, take lilies inside and keep them in heated water and exposed to lots of day light or under grow lights throughout the winter or discard and buy new ones next year.

A Message from Alan & Sherry...

As we all head into the fall season of 2009, both Sherry and I hope everyone had a great summer and success with their water features.   Here at the Pond Headquarters, we have had a time with kids being sick, having to stay out of school, and the list goes on.  Reflecting back on one morning when Isabel, who is our 5 year old, had a 2 day bout with, lets just get to the point, the runs...,  she called my name out during the morning and said, "Dad, I've got Diary real bad!"  Of course, I didn't laugh, I had to hear it again, I asked "What do you have", and she said "I've got Diary real bad"!  I then began to explain.  Nothing like REFLECTING on the good times with the kids and how things happen during your life.  We continue to REFLECT on how fast our kids are growing and how much we need to take time out of our hectic lives to enjoy them and all the other blessings in our life.  As most of you know, this is why we love what we do so that others can have a serene place to reflect and enjoy their blessings as well.

AnAnd for those who were not aware of our new addition above, we introduce you to Trenton (Trent) Wade Koontz, born on March 19, 2009.  Trent is now 6 months old and weighs in at 27 lbs.

Something To Think About!

1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.
3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America contest.
4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.
5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for Best Actor and Actress.
6. Name the last decade's worth of World Series Winners.

How did you do?

The point is, none of us remembers the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They're the best in their fields. But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten.

Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.
______________________________________
Now here's another quiz. See how you do on this one:

1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.
2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.
3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.
4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.
5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.
6. Name half a dozen heroes whose stories have inspired you.

Easier, aint it?

The lesson:

The people who make a difference in our lives aren't the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They're the ones who care. So lets acknowledge them and appreciate what they do for us simply by letting them know that we too care.
STOCKING THE POND WITH FISH
Follow this general rule:

For every 24 square inches of pond surface area, you can stock your pond with  inch in length of fish.  too many fish in an established or new pond can result in poor water quality and low oxygen levels.  Fish require a continuous supply of oxygen to survive.

Monthly Tips
Bulbs...Plan and Plant Now!

Now is the time to think about flowers for the Spring.  Fall is the perfect time to plan and plant you Bulb Gardens.   They also add color around your water feature.  Carolina Pondscapes has access to premium suppliers for the best variety of bulbs available.  We would welcome the opportunity to meet with you to discuss the best locations around your water feature where it will look great during the next spring season.
Aeration in your Water Feature...
In the past newsletter, we informed everyone the importance of ensuring that you are providing plenty of aeration in you watergarden for your fish.  Not only does it provide critical oxygen for the fish, it also helps move debris that settles at the bottom of the pond and allows that debris to be filtered by the skimmer.  This is what helps keep a cleaner pond.

We at Carolina Pondscapes feel the most critical reason to have an aerator is that if your pump goes out, you will not have any aeration for your pond until a new pump is installed.   If your pump is under warranty, and we do not have that pump in stock, it may be a week or more until we can get in a replacement.

We have seen a huge failure rate in pumps that customers purchased from the local Lowes and Home Depot home improvement stores.   The warranties on those pump are normally one year or less, compared to the more professional ones.  Even if the pump is under warranty, it will take time to replace and Carolina Pondscapes does charge a service call to come out and perform any service on the pond.

We have seen in the past where a fun trip to the beach ended in disaster when a homeowner returned to find that they had lost over $2000.00 worth of Koi due to a pump failure.  That customer has since replaced the fish and use her aerator all of the time.  BE PREPARED FOR THE INEVITABLE!  Purchasing a backup pump may not always be the best solution, because your warranty on it begins the day you purchase it, noT the day you begin using it.

We suggest to always have a backup for your water feature, that being an additional pump or a much cheaper alternative, an AERATOR!  This will make sure you are prepared when that old pump decides to fail.

Call Today to order a properly sized aerator for you water feature.
