Greetings!
Carolina Pondscapes would like to welcome you to our August issue of our monthly newsletter. After many years of constructing and servicing water features in the Triad, we finally have dedicated some of our time with a monthly newsletter with things that are happening, not only with us, but with water features in general.
Water Features are still one of the top landscaping features that many homeowners are continuing to install in their landscapes. Our goal is to educate you on new Technologies, Equipment, How-To Information, such as maintaining your water clarity and feeding your fish, Video demonstrations, and much more information in the water featue industry.
Upon deciding a name for our newsletter we thought about what happens when you walk up to your water feature to check on your fish or just observe whats going on with it. Fish are playfully, swimming around and chasing each other as their reflections comes into the corner of your eyes when they launch off the bottom of the pond. The reflection of the trees, the sky, the clouds above give the pond life. Even your reflection appears in ripples of the water. We all even reflect back on the day we just had as we sit down beside the pond and think about how it went. Sherry and I even reflect more about the years behind us, observing how times are changing and how our children have become older and mature during their growing years.
Welcome to

Two Diaries...
A Short Story about a Father and his Son...
At the constant request of his son, a busy dad took a day off to go fishing. It was just the two of them. Leaving behind a desk of cluttered unfinished business, the father drove to the pristine, secluded lake, where they spent the day together fishing, talking, and rowing around the lake. Throughout the day, all the father could think about were the pressing deadlines that he had left behind. Phone calls to return. Projects to complete. Assignments to finish. Meetings to make. Years later, their two journals were discovered as each recorded what the day had meant to them. In the father's journal was recorded, "Took my son fishing-another day lost." But in the boy's journal, the entry read, "Spent the day with dad-it was one of the greatest days of my life!"

PUMP WARRANTIES...
Find out why you should have a backup pump!
Have you ever planned on an event such as a party at your house and had your water feature shut down right before the party began? Over the years, we at Carolina Pondscapes have had many customers call us and say that their pond stopped running and they have a party scheduled for the next day or a in a couple hours, not sure what to do. When a pump is installed, it normally comes with a manufacturers warranty that could be from 1 year, 18 months, or even 2 years. Although your pump may be under warranty, it may be up to 2 weeks or more before a new replacement is received. We have seen pumps last up to 5 plus years, but a majority of them do not.
If you have not had this problem, it may be a good idea to have a backup, which means a pump of the same brand that can be easily hooked up to keep your water feature running. This is especially crititcal if you have large Koi fish. Koi fish need oxygen and they will not survive without it. Also, if the pond is down for over a long period of time, the water will turn stagnant and the ammonia will build up in the water which will also, kill the fish. Call us today to discuss options for you and your water feature. |
Aerators.... A great source for Oxygen!
Don't get caught without a backup!!! Provide you pond with more oxygen during warmer temperatures. This will help keep the pond cleaner since oxygen reduces algae blooms and also will help move debris from the bottom of the pond to the surface where the skimmer can skim off the debris.
Choose from a variety of Low Cost Aerators!

New Underwater LED Fixtures... Compact, Robust Design
Rugged design: With both models, the fixture housing is precision machined from solid bar stock (either brass or stainless steel) using state-of-the-art CNC machining equipment. While other underwater fixtures can be damaged by pond cleaning and maintenance, this heavy, thick-walled design is engineered to withstand forces that can cause other underwater units to fail prematurely.
Available with 2.5 watt LED (LB2ND, comparable to 10 watt halogen) or 3.5 watt LED (LB5ND, comparable to 20 watt halogen ) emitter packages, these units will provide high impact light with minimal energy consumption. Both LED wattages can be ordered in either cool white (4200K) or warm white (2900K). An added advantage of LED is the long life (50,000 hours) without re-lamping, a welcome benefit in underwater applications.
Compact profile:
Small 2" diameter design hides easily in pond walls or next to waterfalls or fountain nozzles. Model 2115 includes an adjustable bracket that allows the unit to be precisely aimed to highlight specific features. (photo below)
Easy installation:
Supplied with a full 15' pigtail of 18/3 double-jacketed water-resistant cable including green ground wire in accordance with Underwriters Laboratories (UL) standards. This cable enables connections outside of the water and to allow the fixture location to be moved for pond maintenance. Options: choice of lenses (clear or frosted) Models:
2114-BSN Natural Brass Underwater LED fixture
2114-SS Stainless Steel Underwater LED fixture
2115-BSN Natural Brass Underwater LED fixture with bracket
2115-SS Stainless Steel Underwater LED fixture with bracket

For features with aquatic pets (including koi fish) we recommend the stainless steel version.

Aqua Advice
How to find a leak on your pond...
-
First step is to turn off the pump. This will stop water from flowing to the waterfall. If you notice the water level continues to drop, you've now determined that the leak is in the pond. Let the water level continue to go down until it stops. When it stops, look slightly above the water level at this point and you should find the area where the water is going out. If a skimmer is on the pond, and the water has droppd below the skimmer faceplace, it's possible that the faceplate on the skimmer is the culprit.
-
If the water level does not drop when the pump is turned off, then we know that the leak is in the plumbing, waterfall or stream, if a stream is on the pond. Most ponds that have a leak while the pump is running will normally have water running out near the waterfall or somewhere near the stream. Look carefully on where the water is flowing. You may have to lift a couple rocks up to find it, but it will probably be there. If you have searched the entire waterfall and stream and determined that the leak is not there, then the plumbing is possibly the problem. Look for saturated areas. If they are wet, start digging the area up. You may find a loose connection.
Many leaks can be taken care of by simply observing where the water is flowing. Following the two steps above is normally the main problems we find with leaks. If you cannot find the leak yourself, feel free to contact Carolina Pondscapes and we will send someone out to find it.
If you have questions about your water feature and would like to have them answered on our website, email us at mail info@carolinapondscapes.com.
We look forward in answering your questions.
