Weekend Wine Tasting at Mondo Vino
Friday: Among the Cyprus - The Wines of Alessandro Landini
We are very fortunate to be hosting Alessandro Landini this Friday from 3-7pm at our tasting bar. Alessandro is the owner/winemaker of the Viticcio and I Greppi estates in Tuscany and has been making waves over the last few years with his outstanding wines.
Fattoria Viticcio in Tuscany has long been the darling of the Wine Spectator and Wine & Spirits magazines. The Landini family have some of the finest vineyard holdings in the famed Greve in Chianti area, and with the recent acquisition of an estate in Bolgheri, I Greppi, plus significant upgrades in the cellars and vineyards, they will prove to be an important winery to watch for years to come.
Founded in 1960 by Lucio and Franca Landini, the Viticcio Estate still stands above the picturesque town of Greve, in the heart of the Chianti Classico region. Their focus is to produce high-quality wines worthy of an international clientele while at the same time respecting the traditions and viticulture of the region. This focus remains the same today under the direction of the second generation, Alessandro Landini.

The Road to Bolgher |
When Alessandro decided to try his luck in Bolgheri, he had no idea how quickly he would find success. It has been clear for years that the Bolgheri area on the Mediterranean coast of Tuscany - too hot for Sangiovese but perfectly suited to Bordeaux varietals - could produce wines of outstanding quality, but the rave reviews that I Greppi's wines received from both the Wine Spectator and Wine Advocate for their first vintage were a very pleasant surprise, not a small feat considering that the majority of the estate's vineyards are only 4 or 5 years old. Encompassing a total of 20 hectares, 15 were recently replanted with high-density vineyards. The principle grape varietals are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, farmed organically like at Viticcio. Needless to say, the quality of wines being produced is very impressive and promises only to increase as the vines mature.
Alessandro's fortune was another's loss, as the vineyard sites of I Greppi were once coveted by the Antinori family to use in their renowned wine Guado al Tasso, and are situated just around the corner from the most famed Bolgheri estate Sassicaia.
