Discussions with Donna Marie
Do certain smells, sounds, sights take you back to winter memories? The smell of cinnamon quickly transports me back to my friend's house when I was a little girl. Her mom made the BEST cinnamon rolls ever! Whenever I see twinkle lights show up in the stores, I chuckle to myself and remember the wad of lights that would be brought down from the attic to undergo repeated tests to find the faulty bulbs. Or I hear the whir of the sewing machine and remember my mom making a new dress to wear to family gatherings. And then, there is the memory of Christmas Eve when we would turn on the radio and listen to Paul Harvey "broadcasting from the North Pole" as Santa took off for his journey. One particular time my older brother and I were absolutely, positively sure we saw those lights on Santa's sleigh as the broadcaster describe, flit across the dark sky that somehow was brighter that night with all of the stars shining off the snow.
What are your memories and your traditions? Did you know that many, many winter traditions and celebrations include some sort of "light" - candles, oil lamps, stars, etc.? It is because of that common theme that the Museum's exploration of winter celebrations is called Festivals of Light. Each year we explore traditions of different winter celebrations as we learn about the unique traditions of each festival and find similarities between them.
Festivals of Llight starts on November 26th and runs through December 28th. We polled our members asking for a new festival to add this year and we are bringing back those we noticed were favorites for the children last year. This year we are exploring Diwali, Hanukkah, Santa Lucia, Christmas Around the World and Kwanzaa. We hope you will join us!

On Wednesday,November 3rd, the Museum will be having an Educational In-Service. These happen 3 times a year for the Museum and allows our educators and staff a day to plan and prepare for programming for the coming months. To allow for this, we will not have any programming happening on November 3rd.
