So
I wonder ... what is your memory of that childhood, "really great place" to read a
book? Was it making a tent with the bedspread and using your
flashlight? Or maybe lying on the floor, curled up next to a great big
dog named Sam. For me it was my little brother's baby rocking chair that
we drug up into a huge oak tree and strapped it into place, so we could read
and look over the fields. The
love of reading has been a part of my life for literally, as long as I can
remember. It is no wonder that I'm very excited to announce our
newest weekly club for 6 - 10 year olds. In October, we are introducing
Reading Club. Under the direction of educator Lindsey
Dunwoodie, our club will explore literature in fun and engaging ways.
This month, we will be digging into fairy tales! We'll learn what makes a
fairy tale, how to write a fairy tale and more. Reading Club is just a
small part of our literacy focus at the Museum. From our Go Figure! book
exhibit that literally walks children into books that teach math and science to
Adventures with Clifford the Big Red Dog, we are engaging our families
in literacy-focused activities every day. I
hope that as you and your children play and explore in the Museum, it's an
igniting point into a lifelong love of books. You can climb up the
mountain up to the tent to read. Or maybe lay on the floor of the
storytelling circle next to the big floppy dog. And yes, if you are looking for
a tree to read by, we have pretend trees inside and a real tree out in Lil'
Green Thumbs!
