Ice cube PaintingNaturalCuriosityandCreativityIce Painting

Celebrate winter using ice to make art at home! This is a great project for little ones who may put items in their mouth!

Supplies: paper, ice cube trays, popsicle sticks, washable tempera paint and/or powdered Kool-Aid (or drink mix)

Younger children: Fill the ice cube trays with water and place popsicle sticks in each cube slot to create handles.   Put in the freezer overnight. Place small amounts of the Kool-Aid on the paper as the color to be painted.  Use the melting ice cube as a paint brush to create a masterpiece.

Older children:  Fill the ice cube trays with washable tempera paint in yellow red and blue, also placing popsicle sticks in each cube slot to create handles. Put in the freezer overnight. Use the ice cube brushes to paint and explore mixing the primary colors on the paper!

* At the museum we are often asked about where we get such washable paint! After a long search and experiments, we have discovered that Kaplan Early Learning Company supplies very washable and non-toxic paint. You may pay a little more, but at the museum we know it's worth it!   Check it out!

It's my privilege to make you among the first to hear this announcement.  The Children's Museum, Seattle is excited to welcome TINKERTOY: Build Your Imagination to Seattle from February 13 - May 28, 2010.

Giant TINKERTOY building pieces create a fantastic framework that helps children ages 3 - 10 understand how imaginative thinking, sharing and teamwork can create solution to real-world problems.  It's a rich education experience for children and adults to enjoy!

We have enjoyed hosting Sesame Street presents: The Body and will be it to see them leave on January 31, 2010.  (Make sure you visit us before the end of the month to play in Super Grover's Obstacle Course and stand under the Giant Sneezing Nose!)

Our members will get a first look at TINKERTOY: Build Your Imagination on the morning of February 13th as we host another Members Only opening.  Watch our website for more details about the exhibit!

It is becoming increasingly clear through research on the brain as well as in other areas of study, that childhood needs play.  Play acts as a forward feed mechanism into courageous, creative, rigorous thinking in adulthood.
