NaturalCuriosityandCreativityLet's Go to the Moon

Playing in our moon sand is a favorite during our Treasure Hunt Tuesday programs.  Now you can have the same fun at home!

Recipe for Homemade Moon Sand

6 cups of play sand
3 cups of cornstarch
1 1/2 cups of cold water

Mix the water and cornstarch together thoroughly, this will take a few minutes to get it nice and smooth.

Gradually mix in the sand, one cup at a time. You'll need to really work it in with your fingers.

PLAY TIME!!

When you're all done, pop it in an airtight container. Next play with it, you'll need to revive it with 2-3 tablespoons of water. Just sprinkle it over and work it in.

Happy Holidays!  Our staff has been busy preparing for Festivals of Light which opened December 2nd and I hope that you and your family visit the Museum to explore a new culture each week.  Of course, don't miss the opportunity to visit Winterfest on Seattle Center campus as well.
As a caregiver, I'm sure you are familiar with children's favorite question, "Why?".  As Executive Director at the Museum, I've found myself answering that question often, especially concerning a few of our safety policies.  I wanted to take this opportunity to talk to you, our most frequent visitors, about a couple important policies.
Hot Beverages require Secured Lids  - Living the Northwest, a cup of coffee in hand is a must have for most of us.  However, it creates a challenge for the museum as we protect our visitors from bump and burn accidents.  Most of our visitors realize the reason for our policy, but when you are walking into the museum holding that precious cup of joe that is going to get you through the day - it's tough to think about safety policies!  We are asking our members to help us by remembering your travel mug when you come (or purchasing one in our gift shop.)
The second policy that I hear "Why?" about is our No Adults without children (even on readmissions).  Our mission to support a family friendly environment where caregivers and children can play together and learn together.  We are not staffed to the level of a daycare, which means we depend on caregivers to be close by their children and actively providing care.
Re-entry to the Museum without a child is an area the brings many questioning looks from visitors.  "But I was already inside?!"  This is another security issue.  First of all, we cannot have adults leave their children unattended in the Museum (even to plug the parking meter) and with the unforunate realities of estranged families and restraining orders, we cannot assume an adult that entered earlier in the day is allowed around the other adults that are with that child now.  For the safety of all of our visitors, we will continue to enforce the No Adult without a child policy.
As a frequent visitor to the Museum, I hope you find yourself smiling a slightly more relaxed smile the next time you hear one of our staff members enforcing our policies.  We look forward to continue to provide a safe and enjoyable place for you and your family to play and learn.

Happy Holidays and take some time to play!

"Play has been man's most useful preoccupation."
