 Welcome to my
January & February 2012 Newsletter!

The numbers have been released and the California University System has a 19.1% increase in applications for the students entering as freshman in the Fall 2012.  All 9 Universities experienced an increase with UCLA at 18.1% and Davis at 7.8%.  As an Independent College Advisor, I feel it is more important than ever to really think "out of the box" and not assume that a UC is a perfect match because you live in California.  Class sizes are large and not getting smaller.  Graduating in 4 years is extremely difficult because professors have lost their jobs and classes have been cut.  With over 4000 awesome 4 year colleges across this country, make sure your list you research and eventually apply to, is representative of the terrific opportunities possible for your college education.

The college process today is very complex. As an Independent College Advisor, I have extensive training and experience in working with high school students.  In Northern California, our fees represent about 2% of the cost of college attendance.  This is a small sum to pay for the benefits an Independent College Advisor provides.

College in Review

George Mason U

George Mason University is considered one of the most diverse universities, with about 20,000 undergraduates on a beautiful campus just 25 minutes on the Metro from Washington, DC. This large public university feels like a small private college.  The majority of the classes are less than 30 students.  Within one's 4 years of study, a student will have no more than 4 large lecture classes (actually the norm is 1 to 4) and Mason's large lecture is less than 100 students.

George Mason is young; it was founded in 1957 and the brick architecture does reflect it's youth.  With rolling hills and majestic trees this campus is full of enthusiastic and engaged students.  The campus is bustling; on week-days as well as week-ends.  Over 7000 students actually live on campus and housing is guaranteed for all 4 years.  Did I mention that students graduate in four years!  There is an impressive list of Combined Bachelor's and Accelerated Master's programs.     Finally, with a quick check mark on the application, you will be reviewed for Merit Scholarships as well as a robust Honor's College.

The Timing of Application Submission

Accepted

Just like in most aspects of life "the early bird catches the worm". In the college admissions process, it is not very different.  My serious suggestion to my clients, "lets get those applications in".  If Early Action (EA) is offered, lets take advantage of it.

The following is a chart that represents this years acceptance rates (AR)at a sampling of colleges, to give you an idea why getting your application in early is a benefit for numerous reasons.

One added point, a high majority of colleges reported seeing an year-over-year higher percentage of early applications.
