NEW to SELF!
Thanks to funding and support from community organizations and some federal stimulus dollars, SELF has a number of collaborative efforts that are underway.  SELF's written organizational goals, values and history emphasize developing partnerships and supporting coalitions and the number of such efforts underway is unprecedented for our agency:

  • Ohio Benefit Bank Marketing Campaign - SELF partnered with the Ohio Association of Second Harvest Foodbanks and 211 to implement a special marketing campaign for the Ohio Benefit Bank sites in Butler County thanks to a special grant from the Ohio Department of Development.  Beginning in July, 12 billboards went up around the county and TV and Radio spots aired through August.  For more information on the Benefit Bank and active sites in Butler County, please visit the SELF Website.
  • Weatherization Intake for Butler County- in partnership with Community Action Partnership of Greater Dayton, SELF now serves as Butler County's Weatherization intake center. SELF can answer any questions and help low-income individuals apply for the federal help.
  • Bridges Out of Poverty and Getting Ahead - Butler County's BridgRhoda Thompson & Kimberlee Ellisones Out of Poverty Coalition, comprised of Butler County's Department of Job and Family Services, United Way, Catholic Charities, Educational Service Center, ADAS Board and SELF began efforts to implement the programs in this county and spread awareness to other community agencies.  The American Recovery & Reinvestment Act made it possible to hire  Coordinator Rhoda Thompson and Getting Ahead Facilitator Kimberlee Ellison to move forward on this project.
Group Workcamps Hamilton Home Repair 2010 Initiative

We are excited to share that SELF and the Hamilton Community Council are co-sponsoring a Group Workcamps Foundation home repair project in Hamilton's 2nd and 4th Wards!  July 4-10 of 2010 up to 400 junior & senior high school students and adult supervisors from all parts of the United States will come to Hamilton to repair the homes of 60- 80 low-income, disabled and/or elderly residents.  These student volunteers will be able to help local homeowners who are not able physically or financially to repair their own homes. These campers commit more than 12,000 hours of free labor to the community.

Examples of projects that will be undertaken include porch and step repair, wheelchair-ramp construction, interior and exterior painting, weatherization, light carpentry, and siding repair.

Our community must contribute a minimum OBB billboard along MLK Blvd in Hamiltonof $19,000 to the project.  All of these funds will be used to purchase building materials from local stores - the more you contribute, the more work that can be done.

Being such a large project, we are in the planning stages already!  If you or someone you know would like to get involved, please contact SELF's Community Relations Coordinator, Kim Weigel.
A Visit to SELF
CongreOBB billboard along MLK Blvd in Hamiltonssman Steve Driehaus stopped by SELF's Hamilton office in May to discuss the issues low-income Butler County residents are facing in the midst of the recession.  He toured the facilities after greeting Board President Suzi Rubin & Executive Director Jeffrey Diver.

Donations to Clients
SELF is always looking for new ways to engage volunteers and encourage our clients.  SELF is grateful for each of the religious institutions, businesses, foundations and individuals that dedicate their time and talents to volunteering for the agency.

The Serendipity Gals Life Group of Legacy Christian  Church in Harrison approached SELF with the idea of donating unique pieces of jewelry to female clients who complete a goal in their journey to self-sufficiency?  Each month, the Serendipity Gals create beautiful sets of earings, bracelets and necklaces for SELF's female clientele.  Those who have received a piece were thrilled with the gift and have worn them to job interviews!

In an effort to further nurture the success of our clients working toward self-sufficiency and who are in the process of securing permanent housing, SELF began accepting Welcome Home Kit donations.  These kits are laundry baskets filled with cleaning supplies, toilet paper, cookware and other necessary home goods
. Thanks to Spring Hill Church of Christ in Middletown and Christ the King Lutheran Church in West Chester, ten kits are ready to help 10 families get settled into their new homes!

If you are involved with a group who may be interested in donating or volunteering, please contact Community Relations Associate Vanessa Jackson.
