Sleep, Read, Snuggle

February is the kind of month that makes me want to stay inside and sleep, read, snuggle and keep warm. This month we help you think about the one thing that can help you with all of those nesting needs.

The Most Important Thing in Your Home is ...

What did you guess? Was it the kitchen, the bath, the television, the computer or how about the shower or the washing machine?

In my humble opinion, the most important thing in your home is your mattress. A good night's sleep is worth your weight in gold. Poor sleep can have many negative side effects including health problems, brain fog, and weight gain. For more information about risks involving lack of sleep check out sleep deprivation.

To avoid sleep deprivation you should buy the very best mattress that you can possibly afford; even if it means waiting to buy other pieces for your bedroom. You should lie down for approximately 15 minutes in different positions to see how your body responds to the mattress. Try to buy one with a return guarantee if you determine that you are not getting your best sleep.

Mattress prices vary based on quality and construction. Some of the most expensive beds are custom designed to fit you and are made by hand. Check out the range of designs below:

Other Cool Things for the Bed

Sheets

If you could only have one set of sheets - it should be this one. Linen sheets from Raw organics. Linen sheets are warm in winter and cool in summer. These sheets can last up to 20 years if cared for properly - so they provide long term value.

Sheets

Organic sheets are a must since you don't want toxic chemicals sneaking into your skin while you sleep. Steal the deal from Target. I have a set of these organic sheets for my bed. They wash beautifully and get even softer with age.

Lie in the lap of luxury with this super soft Alpaca duvet from Anna Sova. No petrochemicals, no toxins, no heavy metal dyes, and no formaldehyde - nothing but wool produced in harmony with nature.

Maybe Alpaca is not your thing. Check out this organic cotton duvet that is easy on the wallet.

Detoxify Your Home: Ban the Electronics from the Bedroom

Electronics in the bedroom can expose you to unnecessary EMFs (electromagnetic fields). One way to reduce this exposure is to remove all electronics from the bedroom. If that is not possible then consider installing a smart power strip that can eliminate the power to the device. Another best practice is to install a "kill switch." Kill switches are designed to cut power off to an area with a simple off/on action. The kill switch can be turned off at bedtime to provide an EMF free sanctuary for sleep.
