Home Sweet Home

You can love your home! If you are not in love with your home, it could be simply that it works against you instead of for you. The interiors of many homes are not designed for how your family really lives. Ill-designed interiors may be cluttered, crowded and difficult to keep clean. Once cluttered or stuffed with furniture, a home can be difficult to un-clutter; difficult to love.

The key to making your home work for you is a good design and ease of maintenance. A well-designed home has room layouts, furnishings and accessories that support how you really live. It is organized and easy to clean and maintain. Some simple changes can help you fall in love with your home again.

Quick Tips

-   Reorganize your main living area so it is easy to enter and exit. Hint: You may have to remove some furniture or some furniture may need to do double duty.

-   Keep your entry way free of clutter. Nothing is more unwelcoming than an entry that makes you feel like you are walking through a land-mine.

-   Clean out and organize your closets. It may also help you get rid of clothes that are no longer worn. An organized closet can change your life.

-   A functional laundry room can also change your life. Make it easy for your family to drop off the clothes that need laundering. Add a folding table with rollers to encourage folding as clothes come out of the dryer and it can do double duty as a crafting/homework table.

-   Most kitchens are the hub of family life. Many are not designed well. Too many things on the counters, no workspace, and no place for kids to do homework while you cook. Clear the counters except for what you use every day. Keep pots and pans where they are easy to reach. Add stools to the counter for seating and homework.

Detoxify Your Home (Life)

As part of your de-cluttering and organizing effort, you may be tempted to buy some inexpensive shelving, furniture or storage boxes made of particle board or MDF (medium density fiberboard). Particle board or MDF commonly contain Formaldehyde. MDF, according to the EPA, is highest formaldehyde-emitting pressed wood product. Controversy still surrounds the concept of formaldehyde as a cancer causing agent. Read about the New Orleans experience and decide if you wish to bring MDF into your home.
