Summer is finally here and renovation season has begun. Whether you are doing the renovation yourself or hiring it out make sure you do your research or consult an expert who can help you make the best choices.
In It for the Long Haul
If you are staying put in your home for the long haul it can be a challenge to figure out what improvements will give you the best savings. Saving energy is one surefire way to reduce expense for the short term and the long haul. One of the easiest ways to figure out what energy saving are the most effective for your situation is to have an energy audit performed. A professional energy audit should include a room by room manual inspection; a blower door test; and a thermographic or infrared scan.
There are several options for financing the energy improvements you decide to make based upon the energy audit results. One option for financing these energy improvements is the Energy Upgrade California program. Click EUA for more information on financing, rebates and contractors in your region. Another option is offered by Umpqua Bank. Click Green Street for more information on this program.
Investing in energy efficient upgrades will can increase the value of your home and put more money in your pocket.

The Healthy Nursery -- Part III (Walls & Ceilings)
The walls and ceiling are often the largest square foot surfaces in the nursery. Most nursery walls are decorated with paint or wall paper. There are so many paint choices today but all paints are definitely not the same. There are natural paints or plasters, no-VOC paints and low-VOC paints.
Natural paints or plasters are derived from plant, food or clay based ingredients. The paints may be made from milk, citrus, soy, chalk, or lime. These paints are petroleum free and usually VOC free. Natural paints do not contribute to indoor air pollution.
Natural paints or plasters are the least toxic choice for your child's room as they virtually eliminate exposure to chemicals that may affect your child's future development. Some choices include Anna Sova, Green Planet and American Clay. Natural paints will cost more, will not be available at Home Depot (a little more challenging to locate) and may in some circumstances a little more challenging to apply. As with any natural substance an ingredient may cause irritation when applying. However, you may sleep easier at night knowing that you made the least toxic choice for your newborn at birth and for years to come.
Want to make your own natural paint. Check out this recipe.

Hemp in Your Backyard
No I am not suggesting that you grow hemp in your backyard. But you can use this deck finish and sealer made from 100% hemp oil. This sealer is the natural choice because it has very low VOC's, fights mildew and fungus without any formaldehyde and is UV resistant. This natural sealer is now available at Hemp Seal.

Detoxifying Your Home
Bugs can be beneficial to your garden -- the right bugs that is. Consider using biological controls instead of pesticides or insecticides. Or consider using prevention and botanical solutions to control or eradicate unwanted pests. A pesticide is any substance used to kill, repel, or otherwise control a pest. Chemicals in pesticides can be harmful to children, pets, humans and the environment when used incorrectly causing unnecessary exposure. For more information on toxicity of pesticides and insecticides check out EPA.
