A Greener Kitchen

You don't have to do a complete remodel to make your kitchen a greener place.

There are many things you can do (of course, I would love to help with the remodel or new design if you are considering it) to make it a cooler place to hang out in.

Here are some quick tips:

  • Use your range vent and/or open a window when running the dishwasher to help remove moisture from the air
  • Repair any leaks or drips under the sink that can cause moisture build-up or mold
  • Use natural, non-toxic or eco-friendly cleaners
  • No air fresheners, please - if you need a nice scent, bring in some fresh flowers that lightly perfume the air
  • Use a counter-top compost collector or fancy under the counter composter (no more smelly garbage)
  • Open the blinds and let the sun shine in (except maybe for those really hot days)
Green Energy

Summer is just about my favorite time of the year.  Whether you are planning a "staycation" or a "getaway" vacation, here are a few things to think about.  Staycations save energy, gas, stress and a whole lot of dollars, while vacations can energize and provide us with a different perspective. I personally do a little bit of both.

I really love to getaway once in awhile.  I do feel that small pang of guilt about the energy I consume while traveling.  I have a nice trick to assuage my guilt - carbon offsets. A carbon offset can be purchased to offset the greenhouse gases often created by travel.  Offsets often fund alternative energy research and projects.

Here are a few places you can purchase carbon offsets:

Join other individuals, families and companies who ban together to offset their carbon footprints.

Join over 45,000 individuals and 1,200 businesses working to save the environment.

Recognized as a "carbon pioneer" and leader in the U.S. carbon market.

Green FutureLiquid.wood

Here is a really Jetson-like product called "liquid wood" that could help reduce the use of plastic and replace it with a more natural, non-petroleum-based substance.  A German research firm, Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology manufacturers nativity scenes made of this liquid wood or "arboform."  Note: I don't think you will find these at the Macy's Christmas Shoppe -- at least not this year.
