Boaters Concerned About New Ethanol Blends
Ohio
boaters are caught in the middle of a growing issue of concern that
focuses on alternative fuels. Specifically, the Environmental
Protection Agency will soon allow ethanol-blended fuels containing up
to 15 percent ethanol instead of the current 10 percent limit. Standing in opposition to this measure are some of the nation's
boaters and boating organizations such as Boat U.S. and the National
Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA). Their chief area of concern is
whether boat engines and marine fuel tanks will be negatively impacted
by the increased percentage of ethanol-blended marine fuels.
"This is not about growing renewable energy," said Margaret Podlich,
vice president of government affairs for Boat U.S. in a July press
release from that organization. "We had significant problems with the
nationwide rollout of E-10 a few years ago and without further
independent testing of E-15 with marine engines, we are very likely to
see similar issues," she said.
