On President Obama's Support of Marriage Equality for All Citizens

Troy & Phillip
by Rev. Dr. Troy D. Perry
Founder & Moderator Emeritus of
Metropolitan Community Churches

Rev. Troy Perry performed the first public same-sex wedding in the United States in Huntington Park, California, in 1968. In 1970, he filed the first-ever lawsuit seeking legal recognition of same-gender marriages. While that lawsuit was dismissed, it served to launch the marriage equality movement in the United States. In 2003, Rev. Perry's churches were responsible for the legalization of marriage equality in the nation of Canada. And Rev. Perry and his husband, Phillip Ray De Blieck, were part of the first modern day marriage lawsuit filed in California, along with their attorney Gloria Allred. Their case was combined with other cases, and the California Supreme Court ruled in their favor.

PUBLIC STATEMENT:

Today, May 9, 2012, marks another red letter day for equality for lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgender persons. As an activist who has worked for more than 40 years for same-gender marriage rights, I am thrilled with President Obama's support for marriage equality for all people.

My husband, Phillip Ray De Blieck [pictured above with Rev. Elder Perry], and I were guests of President Obama at the White House on our 25th anniversary in 2009, and we spoke with the First Lady about the depth of our relationship. Like so many other LGBT couples, we salute the president for hearing and respecting the stories and journeys of our country's LGBT citizens, and are honored to have played a small role in the evolution of the President's thinking on marriage equality.

Today's announcement by President Obama parallels the evolution taking place in the hearts and minds of citizens across the U.S. Polls now consistently show that a majority of U.S. citizens support marriage equality for LGBT people and this percentage of support continues to grow.

President Obama's announcement is historically important for another reason: Throughout our nation's history, each time a U.S. President has announced personal support for civil rights measures, those rights have ultimately become law.

Forty years of activism has taught me that the journey towards equality under the law is one of steps forward, and occasionally steps backward. Today's announcement by President Obama marks a giant leap forward for all of our citizens, and for the cause of equality under the law.

The Fellowship of Affirming Ministries

For Immediate Release: 09 May 2012

Today Metropolitan Community Churches and congregations of The Fellowship of Affirming Ministries around the globe can lift high the banner we were founded under: God's all inclusive love and the right of every human being, including God's LGBTI children, to live in the fullness of that love.

While the state of North Carolina passed a referendum making good, decent, law-abiding, tax-paying citizens from all walks of life, including children, less than equal citizens under an amended state constitution, the President of the United States declared his support for Marriage Equality.

"I have to tell you," President Obama said in an interview given today in the Cabinet room of the White House, "that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors, when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don't Ask Don't Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in marriage, at a certain point I've just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married."

While the North Carolina vote was and remains an act of violence, designed not only to limit the rights and social acceptance of LGBTI people and our families, but to marginalize heterosexual partners in committed or civil unions, the affirmation by President Obama is an act of courage that says clearly to every American, no matter our sexual orientation or gender identity, no matter the type of commitments we have made, we are all full and equal citizens who should be treated as such.

We hope every child who heard a sermon advocating extreme violence against those who are different from the majority will find strength in the President's heartfelt interview today, and be able to hold on for the day when difference is no longer vilified or condemned. We hope every child who hears the President's words will find hope for their futures.

And we hope every adult who felt that somehow being a person of faith conflicts with being an advocate for equality will take to heart the words of President Obama and find the courage to

pray and reflect on the meaning of believing in a God who is defined as love.

"The North Carolina vote, while very disappointing," said The Rev. Dr. Jim Merritt, Director for Marriage Equality and Adoptions for the Global Justice Institute and Public Policy Team, "must not be seen as the final word on Marriage Equality anywhere. Coalitions of those committed to equality and justice for all people have been built and empowered in ways that will enable them to continue working in North Carolina and all over the country. We will not give up until Marriage Equality is the law, not only in North Carolina, but all across the United States and even the globe. President Obama's evolution in thought and his courage in sharing his convictions give us all hope for the kind of changes globally that will guarantee freedom and equality for everyone."

Six states in the United States as well as the District of Columbia and 10 nations currently guarantee marriage equality. The Department of Justice in the United States has been ordered not to defend DOMA {Defense of Marriage Act} in the federal court system.

The day is coming, friends and colleagues, when marriage equality will be the rule of law, because it is the will of God. We firmly believe this. It is this conviction that gives us hope for a future where the world will live in peace with its God-given diversity.

Hold on! Don't ever give up! The defeat in North Carolina is only temporary. A better, more accepting and supportive world is before us.

Grace and Peace,

Nancy Wilson

MCCLV Mother's Day Celebration
The Pantie Raid | May 12th & 13th
Children's Underware

2012 Pantie Raid for Mothers

(& their Children)

As part of our Mother's Day observance at MCCLV on May 12th & 13th we are collecting NEW (in the package) underwear & socks for mothers and children to be donated to SafeNest and Shade Tree. Women seeking shelter from abusive relationships often arrive with only the clothes on their backs.

(The following testimony was sent by one of our members after our 2010 Pantie Raid and was shared with her permission. Identifying information has been removed to respect her privacy.)

I want to take a moment and commend you for making the panty raid such a success! Five years ago I was a victim of domestic violence. My then husband, took me hostage in a restroom where he proceeded to beat me for 7 hours, with our 4 year old right outside the door. That same day I left. And yes, it's true when you say, "only with clothes on my back." We were homeless for two weeks. During my struggle, I remember a time when I had to choose between gassing my car or buying socks for my sons. I chose the gas because I still had to drive my sons to school and myself to work. I did seek help from the people of Safe Nest. Not only did they offer me a place to stay, they also offered me legal advice. I was fortunate enough not to stay in a woman's shelter because my good friend opened up her home to us. Yet, I am eternally grateful to Safe Nest for the help and support they gave me with my legal issues and paper work. I make it a point to donate to them every chance that I get. I thank you again for helping out such an important organization and for touching the lives of abused women and children in our community!

Respectfully,

One of your Members!

Last year, YOU made a difference

by contributing over 1,100 undergarments.

Please help again this year

as we continue to

U can ¢HANGE Uganda

During 2012 MCCLV is working with UFMCC's Global Outreach to end oppression, persecution and create a safe haven in the African country of Uganda. Our goal is to raise $1,500 to support this important and life sustaining ministry that seeks to counter the negative influences of the American Religious Right. Our Moderator, The Rev. Elder Nancy Wilson writes: We are making great alliances there, and working to help establish safe space, and also helping to establish an "enterprise zone" so that the young people there who are coming out also have a means of support, can have jobs and support themselves as they fight for human rights and try to stay in their country safely. . . . For additional information on the history and current status of the oppression in Uganda, click HERE. Consider giving an additional gift of $20, $50, $100, $250, $500 or any amount above and beyond your regular giving to this important outreach. Or pick-up one of the FREE coin banks at the info center/slat wall and start collecting your spare change.

Received to date $107.51
