A Personal Testimony of Faith . . .

"My parents always tithed and I grew up thinking that tithing was the "normal" thing to do. I saw it as a responsibility we had to God and our church community. Actually, I never thought much about it at all. It was an automatic thing to do.
Later, when I learned that the some of the Jewish leaders took tithing to mean that 10% of everything even down to the spices they owned should be given to the church, I took a new look at the 10% I was giving. Was it really 10% of what I had? What about my time and talents? I wasn't giving 10% of those things!
But Jesus taught that God isn't asking us to follow the letter of the law but rather to Love Him and to Love others in response to the great Love he has showered on us. God only asks for 10%. I now see that giving my 10% is the least I can do and I now give it out of gratitude much more than responsibility.  It feels good to give and 10% feels like a very small portion. My aim now is to give in response to His Love, to give of myself and my money in response and gratitude to Him. Ten percent is only the beginning."
