"Water Works: 150 Years of Louisville Water Company" Opening Soon

Check out our brand new exhibit "Water Works: 150 Years of Louisville Water Company," opening October 22. As a preview, here are some cool things that you didn't know about the Louisville Water Company (called LWC):

  • LWC water was awarded the title "Best Tasting Tap Water in the Country" by the American Water Works Association.

  • The LWC runs 300 different tests on our drinking water every day!

  • Before LWC began supplying our city with clean drinking water, Louisville had the awful nickname "Graveyard of the West" because so many illnesses and deaths were caused by contaminated drinking water. Water became contaminated in many ways, but the most common: pollution from factories and slaughterhouses dumping waste into the river or people building outdoor bathrooms (called 'outhouses') too close to their drinking wells!

  • It takes two days of treatment for the LWC to turn muddy, brown Ohio River water to the clear, sparkling drinking water that comes out of your tap.

  • In early Louisville, there was no fire department. When a fire broke out, volunteers passed buckets of water from the nearest pond or stream to the burning building. Today, the LWC looks after more than 17,000 fire hydrants around our city. A huge fire in 1840 destroyed more than 30 buildings along Louisville's Main Street. That fire convinced people that the city needed a Fire Department!

  • Today, the LWC looks after more than 17,000 fire hydrants around our city.

  • The Water Tower at LWC is decorated at the top with beautiful statues of the Four Season, Greek & Roman gods and goddesses... and a Native American Indian with dog.
Can You Find Sir Stanley?
Sir Stanley is a gallant knight in shining armor who likes to explore the galleries of the Frazier Museum. In every edition of the Kids Club e-News, Sir Stanley will leave historical clues about his latest learning expedition.

Your mission is to follow the clues to Sir Stanley's new hang-out in the museum. The first Kids Club member to find and post a photo of Sir Stanley in his new location on our Frazier Family Fun Facebook page will receive an awesome prize from our Museum Store!

This issue's clue:
Some people say, "Is that pioneer a dude?"
Which we think is more than a little rude.
It's hard to clean, cook, raise kids AND be 'purty'
When your world is sweaty and grimy and dirty!
Git Along Lil' Doggies on The Pony Express

Cool New Stuff on the 3rd Floor

If you have visited the third floor lately you will have noticed some big changes! If you haven't seen them, be sure to stop by and check out:

  • Our all new gallery titled "Britain: People on the Move" to see Bronze Age artifacts and learn more about the early settlers of Great Britain.

  • Two new archery interactives: figure out which of your eyes is dominant to see which arm you "shoot" with and then try the bow pull interactive to test your archery skills.

  • Corner nook about how craftsmen made a mail shirt.

  • New rubbing station of reproduction memorial brasses to show what real people looked and dressed like in the Middle Ages!

  • Changes in the Tournament & Tudor galleries, especially information on Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I.
You may also notice that there are some new walls on the third floor, that is because we are adding even more stuff, and we needed more wall space to do it! Keep an eye out for the Newton nook that is coming soon in the Stuart Gallery!
