Vision Quest in the Owlshead Mountains
Step across the threshold into the wonder of your own journey, returning to wild nature to listen, be still and discover your calling, your healing and the gifts you wish to bring to the world. This 9-day vision quest experience is an opportunity to unfold your wings in partnership with the earth, the stones, the plants, and the animals, which help you to remember why you are here.
The Vision Quest is an ancient rite of passage ceremony, enabling people to engage an age-old pattern: completion of an old life, movement through the threshold of the unknown, and a return to the world reborn. People in any stage of life transition will find meaning in this powerful process. This unique trip includes three days of preparation, three days of solo time in nature at a place of your choosing, and three days of incorporation to help make meaning of your journey and prepare you to bring your gifts back home to your community.

Innovation in Compensation
The regular tuition of $1,245 includes food, backcountry fees, program facilitation and follow-up contacts with both the group and each individual participant. However, we have together decided to offer this program based on the idea of a "Gift Economy." We wish to use this program to practice giving and receiving from the heart, with no set obligation. With this approach, reciprocity is a key element. We will charge only $400 per person upfront, just to cover our basic costs. At the end of the program, we'll invite members of the quest group to consider three factors as they contemplate providing a further "gift" to Rites of Passage: (1) ability to pay, (2) value received, and (3) willingness to support our work in the world. From the vantage point of experience, participants can then offer a reciprocal gift for what has been received. This will be an opportunity to give from a place of service and contribution, instead of coercion or expectation.
Offering the program in this way is an experiment, one that moves us away from the economic principles prevalent in our culture and closer perhaps to an indigenous viewpoint, relying on the flow of each person's gifts to balance the circle. While we don't yet know how it will work, it's an exciting opportunity for us to learn more about living our gifts as guides, building community, and trusting the Great Mystery to take care of everyone. |
