Letter from our Executive Director: Sally Coates

Dear SFCASA Friends, This year we celebrate our 20th anniversary of being a resource to the vulnerable children and youth in the San Francisco foster care system. From graduating our first class of 11 CASA volunteers to serve 11 foster youth in 1991 to serving over 300 children a year today we continue to keep the commitment of being the eyes, ears and voice for the hushed children in our dependency system. Our vision remains unchanged: that every child has a safe and loving home and is given the opportunity to thrive. The truths we have learned about ourselves over these 20 years: - CASA is unique, the only program where citizen volunteers are appointed by the court to represent a child's best interests.
- Children with a CASA volunteer are substantially less likely to spend time in long-term foster care, defined as more than 3 years in care.
- Cases involving a CASA volunteer are more likely to be permanently closed. Less than 10% of children with a CASA volunteer re-enter the foster care system.
Contrary to what people might think, we do not have substantial government funding nor do we raise revenues from the services we provide. Beyond that, every year we start from zero to build our revenue to meet our budget. Consequently we are very dependent on the changing priorities of our donors. And that is where you come in. Thank you for your support of SFCASA-whether this is your first year or your 20th year as a friend, as a donor, or as a volunteer, you stand with us to ensure that through all times we can continue to provide services to the abused and neglected children and youth in San Francisco's foster care system. Thank you for making it all possible. Sincerely,

Featured Article: Thank you to all of our Community Partners!
| This winter, several community partners chose SFCASA to receive the benefits of their annual fundraising campaigns. We would like to extend a big thanks to Peet's Coffee & Tea, Patxi's Chicago Pizza, and University of San Francisco School of Law's Equal Justice Society for their support and for sharing our work with their communities.
In December, employees of our local Peet's Coffee & Tea donated their Christmas Eve tips, which were then generously matched by Peet's. The holiday season is especially overwhelming for children we serve-the proceeds we received from Peet's were used to support volunteer advocacy and mentoring services, as well as to offset costs for holiday gifts for the children in our program. Thank you for making the holiday season a little brighter, Peet's!
Last month, Patxi's Chicago Pizza and SFCASA teamed up for their 52 Weeks of Giving fundraiser. Each week, all year long, Patxi's is donating 10% of their proceeds to a different nonprofit dedicated to education and children's health and welfare. On February 8, 2011, Patxi's in Hayes Valley brought the mission and goals of SFCASA to pizza-goers! Thank you, Patxi's for giving back to the community you serve!

Artist, Sheila Tajima-Shadle, donated her artwork "Who Will Speak for Me?" to SFCASA
| On February 18, 2011, USF School of Law's Equal Justice Society hosted their 7th Annual Creative Justice Art Show. This year's show, "Fostering Dreams of Equality,"aimed to illuminate the experiences of foster children and youth who struggle with access to justice. All proceeds from the event were donated in support of SFCASA's work. It was an honor to be part of the inspiration for many of these up-and-coming artists. Thank you, EJS, for making this happen!
If you have a business, or know of one that would like to support SFCASA through a fundraising campaign, please contact Melanie Rogers at 415-399-6130 or melanie@sfcasa.org.
