Hey there!

Do you believe July is almost over!?! Good grief!

I've been busy in the studio over the last week, continuing with the collages and feeling guilty about not helping my sister get ready for our impending garage/pole barn sale. (This Friday and Saturday if you are in the TC area... stop by!)

Met with the lovely managers at the Traverse City, Michaels store to discuss my upcoming acrylic classes. I'm very excited about this... I love helping people learn to paint! Since the classes are sponsored by Grumbacher... I got a big box of free paint, brushes and canvas to demonstrate with... Wow... Just one of the best things to happen to an artist! Classes will be starting up in mid-August.

Acrylic Collage
not for sale just yet

Hollyhocks is the newest collage that I've finished and even though it took FOREVER to complete, I'm still loving the process. I've ordered some interesting new papers that I think will be really fun to use...  Just waiting for the UPS man to bring them to me! Below, is a detail shot...

I'll be showing these new collages at Flint Street Gallery (inside Little Monsters toy store) in September. That's in Lake Orion, MI.
Idea Spark-lers
Do you need some painting ideas to get you going? Well, you've come to the right place!

This week's Spark-ler is more about supplies than process... I use some regular household stuff when I paint.

Ice Cube Trays, Tupperware, Freezer Paper, colander, and a bucket ... Who woulda thunk?

paint bucket

One of my favorite finds is a metal strainer/colander that fits perfectly inside a plastic bucket. I fill the bucket so that there is about and inch of water above the lower surface of the colander.... then I can scrape, the paint filled brushes along the colander to help with cleaning... The pigment falls to the bottom of the bucket...leaving clean-ish water that the brushes are sitting in. The brushes are only sitting in a small amount of water (below the ferrule).. and not standing up on the bristles... (better for brushes)

freezer paper and ice cube trays

The shiny side of freezer paper makes a great and economical disposable palette... I tape it on top of my metal butcher tray palette...easy peasy.

Plastic ice cube trays make great paint wells for acrylic. White or cream colored work best. (you don't want royal blue or green trays influencing your color choices) Then find a 'Tupperware' container with a burp lid to put your ice cube trays into...it will keep the color fresh for a couple of days if you mist them after your painting session. You can also stretch some "press and seal" brand plastic wrap on top of the cube trays... great way to travel to and from paint class!

If you have any good art tools or tips...please share them with me...and I'll pass them on!
