Hey there!

So, how's your week going? Mine's been great!

I was really happy to receive two prizes in the ArtCenter of Traverse City's "It's Not Just Material" show. It celebrates work that goes beyond visual appeal, and is meaningful to the artist. We were encouraged to add a "blurb" to our jury form (that was printed out and displayed next to the art) and it's interesting to read what inspired everyone's work.  The show is at the ArtCenter through August 2.

PS... I keep trying to get a smaller font, but it keeps reverting back to this big size... At least you won't need your reading glasses! Hope I'll get it sorted out by next weeks note.

Acrylic Collage

not for sale at this time

I've been having a lot of fun cutting and pasting. :)  I'm really into collage at the moment. It's a bit like quilting... but without the sewing. Collage (for me) is about simplifying the shapes into pleasing patterns and colors. What's not to like!?!

You can see a few more that I've completed this week in my blog.

The only downside is that they are quite labor intensive.... Look for "how I do collage" in an upcoming idea spark-ler.

Idea Spark-lers
Are you in need of some painting ideas to get you going? Well, you've come to the right place!

Using alcohol (just rubbing alcohol mind you) on wet watercolor or acrylic... makes interesting textures.
Using other sorts of alcohol can have some interesting effects too...but I don't recommend it.:)

Below are some examples of dropping rubbing alcohol into wet paint. You get different results on white paper (center small green square) The rest of the examples were done on pre-painted paper.

The lower left one was over painted with white acrylic and then the alcohol was dropped in and it pushed the white away and revealed the already painted paper.

I use an "oiler boiler" to draw the alcohol onto the paper.

I've been using these sorts of paper for the collages I'm working on. Try it out... it's rather addicting!

Here's an example of a background using the alcohol technique.
